# Sheldon Roberts

**C. Sheldon Roberts** (October 27, 1926 – June 6, 2014)[1] was an American semiconductor pioneer, and member of the "[traitorous eight](/source/Traitorous_eight)" who founded [Silicon Valley](/source/Silicon_Valley).

## Biography

Roberts earned a [Bachelor's degree](/source/Bachelor's_degree) in [metallurgical engineering](/source/Metallurgical_engineering) from [Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute](/source/Rensselaer_Polytechnic_Institute) in 1948, and a [Master's degree](/source/Master's_degree) in 1949 and [Ph.D.](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) in 1952, from [MIT](/source/MIT).

Roberts then worked in research at the [Naval Research Lab](/source/Naval_Research_Lab) and the [Dow Chemical Company](/source/Dow_Chemical_Company). He joined the seminal [Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory](/source/Shockley_Semiconductor_Laboratory) division of [Beckman Instruments](/source/Beckman_Instruments) in [Mountain View, California](/source/Mountain_View,_Santa_Clara_County,_California), but left the company along with other members of the [traitorous eight](/source/Traitorous_eight) with the backing of [Sherman Fairchild](/source/Sherman_Fairchild) to form the influential [Fairchild Semiconductor](/source/Fairchild_Semiconductor) corporation.

Roberts later founded [Amelco](/source/Amelco) (known now as [Teledyne](/source/Teledyne)) with traitorous eight alumni [Jean Hoerni](/source/Jean_Hoerni) and [Jay Last](/source/Jay_Last).
