Named by the [United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee](/source/United_Kingdom_Antarctic_Place-Names_Committee) (UK-APC) in 1977 for [Ernest B. Sheldon](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ernest_B._Sheldon&action=edit&redlink=1), [British Antarctic Survey](/source/British_Antarctic_Survey) (BAS) meteorological observer, Adelaide Station, 1968–69, and [Stonington Island](/source/Stonington_Island), 1969–70; [Base Commander](/source/Base_Commander), Adelaide Station, 1975–76, and [Rothera Station](/source/Rothera_Research_Station), 1976–77.
