**Sheldon Shane Cottrell** (born 19 August 1989) is a [Jamaican](/source/Jamaica) international [cricketer](/source/Cricket) who plays for the [West Indies cricket team](/source/West_Indies_cricket_team). He is a left-arm [fast-medium bowler](/source/Fast_bowling) and a right-handed [batsman](/source/Batsman).

## Early life

Before starting his cricket career, he stated in an interview that he was once a soldier of [Jamaica Defence Force](/source/Jamaica_Defence_Force) and that's the reason that Sheldon Cottrell performs salutes or tributes as a sign of celebration most of the time whenever he gets any of the wickets, in a perfect military style.

## Career

In first class cricket, Cottrell plays for [Leeward Islands](/source/Leeward_Islands_national_cricket_team). He made his Test Debut in November 2013 [against India](/source/West_Indian_cricket_team_in_India_in_2013%E2%80%9314) at [Eden Gardens](/source/Eden_Gardens), [Calcutta](/source/Calcutta) in the penultimate Test of [Sachin Tendulkar](/source/Sachin_Tendulkar).[1] He is known to march and [salute](/source/Salute) to the pavilion followed by opening his arms to the heavens (formerly a [dab](/source/Dab_(dance))) after every wicket as he is a [Jamaica Defence Force](/source/Jamaica_Defence_Force) soldier, and was among the army workforce manning the pitch during the fifth ODI against India at Sabina Park in 2011.[2][3]

He made his [T20I](/source/Twenty20_International) debut [against England](/source/English_cricket_team_in_West_Indies_in_2013%E2%80%9314#3rd_T20I) in March 2014. He made his [One Day International](/source/One_Day_International) debut for the West Indies [against South Africa](/source/West_Indian_cricket_team_in_South_Africa_in_2014%E2%80%9315) on 25 January 2015.[4] Cottrell was a part of the 2015 [West Indies](/source/West_Indies_cricket_team) World Cup squad, and returned to the ODI side on 23 December 2017 against New Zealand after a 2-year absence.

In May 2018, he was selected to play for the [Leeward Islands national cricket team](/source/Leeward_Islands_national_cricket_team) in the Professional Cricket League draft, ahead of the 2018–19 season.[5][6] On 3 June 2018, he was selected to play for the Vancouver Knights in the players' draft for the [inaugural edition](/source/2018_Global_T20_Canada) of the [Global T20 Canada](/source/Global_T20_Canada) tournament.[7] He was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, with sixteen dismissals in eight matches.[8]

In April 2019, he was named in the [West Indies' squad](/source/2019_Cricket_World_Cup_squads#West_Indies) for the [2019 Cricket World Cup](/source/2019_Cricket_World_Cup).[9][10] He finished the tournament as the leading wicket-taker for the West Indies, with twelve dismissals in nine matches.[11] In the [2020 IPL auction](/source/List_of_2020_Indian_Premier_League_personnel_changes), he was bought by the [Kings XI Punjab](/source/Kings_XI_Punjab) ahead of the [2020 Indian Premier League](/source/2020_Indian_Premier_League).[12] He was later released by Kings XI Punjab ahead of [2021 Indian Premier League](/source/2021_Indian_Premier_League).[13]

In July 2020, he was named in the [St Kitts & Nevis Patriots](/source/St_Kitts_%26_Nevis_Patriots) squad for the [2020 Caribbean Premier League](/source/2020_Caribbean_Premier_League).[14][15]

In September 2021, Cottrell was named as one of four reserve players in the West Indies' squad for the [2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup](/source/2021_ICC_Men's_T20_World_Cup).[16] In July 2022, he was signed by the [Dambulla Giants](/source/Dambulla_Giants) for the [third edition](/source/2022_Lanka_Premier_League) of the [Lanka Premier League](/source/Lanka_Premier_League).[17]
