Big Horn Mine

**Sheep Mountain Wilderness** is a [wilderness area](/source/Wilderness_area) of 41,883 acres (169 km2)[1] within the [San Gabriel Mountains National Monument](/source/San_Gabriel_Mountains_National_Monument) and managed by the [Angeles National Forest](/source/Angeles_National_Forest). It is within [Los Angeles County](/source/Los_Angeles_County%2C_California) and [San Bernardino County](/source/San_Bernardino_County%2C_California), [southern California](/source/Southern_California).

The [U.S. Congress](/source/United_States_Congress) passed the [California Wilderness Act of 1984](/source/California_Wilderness_Act_of_1984), which created this wilderness area and added it to the [National Wilderness Preservation System](/source/National_Wilderness_Preservation_System).

The wilderness includes [Iron Mountain](/source/Iron_Mountain_(Los_Angeles_County)), an 8,007 ft (2,441 m) peak.

## Recreation

Notable hiking in the area includes Heaton Flat along the East Fork of the [San Gabriel River](/source/San_Gabriel_River_(California)) to [Bridge to Nowhere](/source/Bridge_to_Nowhere_(San_Gabriel_Mountains)). Also popular for hikes is the trail to the 277-acre (1.12 km2) [Big Horn Mine](/source/Big_Horn_Mine), which was purchased from the owner in 2006 by the [Wilderness Land Trust](/source/Wilderness_Land_Trust), and incorporated into the wilderness after being transferred to the [US Forest Service](/source/United_States_Forest_Service).[2]
