**Shchekino** ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): Щёкино), also romanized **Shchyokino**, is a [town](/source/Types_of_inhabited_localities_in_Russia) and the [administrative center](/source/Administrative_center) of [Shchyokinsky District](/source/Shchyokinsky_District) in [Tula Oblast](/source/Tula_Oblast), [Russia](/source/Russia), located on the [Moscow](/source/Moscow)—[Simferopol](/source/Simferopol) highway ([M2](/source/M2_highway_(Russia))), 25 kilometers (16 mi) south of [Tula](/source/Tula%2C_Russia), the administrative center of the [oblast](/source/Oblast). Population: 58,139 ([2010 census](/source/2010_Russian_census));[3] 61,588 ([2002 census](/source/2002_Russian_census));[9] 69,251 ([1989 Soviet census](/source/1989_Soviet_census));[10] 72,000 (1977).

## History

It was founded in 1871 in connection with the development of [brown coal](/source/Lignite) deposits and soon supplanted [Krapivna](/source/Krapivna%2C_Tula_Oblast) as the main settlement in the district.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] It was granted town status in 1938.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]
