**Sharif Atkins** (born January 29, 1975) is an American actor. He is best known for his roles as [Dr. Michael Gallant](/source/Michael_Gallant) on *[ER](/source/ER_(TV_series))* (2001–2006), FBI Agent [Clinton Jones](/source/List_of_White_Collar_characters#Clinton_Jones) on *[White Collar](/source/White_Collar_(TV_series))* (2009–2014), and Captain Norman 'Boom Boom' Gates on *[NCIS: Hawaiʻi](/source/NCIS%3A_Hawai%CA%BBi)* (2021–2024).

## Early life

Atkins was born in [Pittsburgh](/source/Pittsburgh), [Pennsylvania](/source/Pennsylvania), and grew up in [Chicago](/source/Chicago), [Illinois](/source/Illinois).[2] He earned his bachelor's degree in theatre/speech from [Northwestern University](/source/Northwestern_University) in 1997. While at Northwestern in 1996, Atkins was initiated as a member of the [Kappa Alpha Psi](/source/Kappa_Alpha_Psi) fraternity (Theta chapter).[3] In 1998, he studied at the Los Angeles Performing Arts Conservatory (formerly PDAC), before getting his start in film and television.

## Career

He gained fame for his role as [Dr. Michael Gallant](/source/Cast_of_ER#Main_characters), a character that debuted in the eighth season (2001) of the [NBC](/source/NBC) medical drama *[ER](/source/ER_(TV_series))*.[4] He left *ER* after the 2003–2004 season. In 2004, he went on to star in the short-lived police drama *[Hawaii](/source/Hawaii_(TV_series))* as former [Chicago Police Department](/source/Chicago_Police_Department) Detective John Declan, who transferred to an elite crime unit of the [Honolulu Police Department](/source/Honolulu_Police_Department).[5][6] Atkins continued to make guest appearances in both the 2004–2005 and 2005–2006 seasons of *ER*, with his character returning on leave from duty in [Iraq](/source/Iraq) as a [U.S. Army](/source/United_States_Army) physician. His character was killed in Iraq at the end of the 2005–2006 season.[7] Atkins also portrayed the recurring character Gary Navarro in the series *[The 4400](/source/The_4400)*. In 2005, Atkins appeared in the TV sitcom *[Eve](/source/Eve_(American_TV_series))* as Shelly's boyfriend Grant.

Atkins played Special Agent [Clinton Jones](/source/Clinton_Jones_(White_Collar)) in USA Network's *[White Collar](/source/White_Collar_(TV_series))* from 2009 to 2014.[2]

He has appeared as Assistant United States Attorney Rivers in the CBS drama *[The Good Wife](/source/The_Good_Wife)*. In 2009, he appeared in season 4, episode 25 of *[Criminal Minds](/source/Criminal_Minds)* - "To Hell..." as Sgt. William Hightower. Atkins has also guest-starred in season 8 of *[CSI: Miami](/source/CSI%3A_Miami)*.

In 2014, he appeared as a [Nova Corps](/source/Nova_Corps) pilot in [*Guardians of the Galaxy*](/source/Guardians_of_the_Galaxy_(film)).[8]

In 2021, he began a recurring role as Norman 'Boom Boom" Gates in *[NCIS: Hawaiʻi](/source/NCIS%3A_Hawai%CA%BBi)* until the series was cancelled in 2024.[9]
