# Sham Chun River

The **Shenzhen River** (Chinese: 深圳河; pinyin: *Shēnzhèn Hé*), known as the **Shamchun** or **Shumchun River** in Cantonese, serves as the [natural border](/source/List_of_countries_and_territories_by_land_borders) between [Hong Kong](/source/Hong_Kong) and [mainland China](/source/Mainland_China), together with [Deep Bay](/source/Deep_Bay,_China), [Mirs Bay](/source/Mirs_Bay), and the [Sha Tau Kok River](/source/Sha_Tau_Kok_River).

It formed a part of the limit of the [lease](/source/Concessions_and_leases_in_international_relations) of the [New Territories](/source/New_Territories) in 1898 in the [Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory](/source/Convention_for_the_Extension_of_Hong_Kong_Territory) (known also as the Second Convention of Peking).

It separates [Yuen Long District](/source/Yuen_Long_District), [North District](/source/North_District,_Hong_Kong) of [Hong Kong](/source/Hong_Kong), and the [city](/source/Subprovincial_city) of [Shenzhen](/source/Shenzhen), [Guangdong](/source/Guangdong). Its source is at [Wutong Mountain](/source/Wutong_Mountain), Shenzhen. Its [tributaries](/source/Tributary) includes [Ping Yuen River](/source/Ping_Yuen_River), [Shek Sheung River](/source/Shek_Sheung_River), [Sheung Yue River](/source/Sheung_Yue_River), [Ng Tung River](/source/Ng_Tung_River), [Buji River](/source/Buji,_Shenzhen) and [Tan Shan River](/source/Tan_Shan_River). The [Shenzhen Reservoir](/source/Shenzhen_Reservoir) also flows into the river when it is full.

The river flows into [Deep Bay](/source/Deep_Bay,_China) (also known as Hau Hoi Wan and Shenzhen Bay). The [Mai Po Marshes](/source/Mai_Po_Marshes) is at its [estuary](/source/Estuary).

Efforts have been made to alleviate flooding and pollution problems through river draining, which produced the [Lok Ma Chau Loop](/source/Lok_Ma_Chau_Loop).
