# Shahrud (river)

The **Shahrood** or **Shah-Rud** (Persian: شاهرود), also translated as *Shah River*, is a river in northern [Iran](/source/Iran).

## Course

The Shahrood originates on the slopes of the [Takht-e Suleyman Massif](/source/Takht-e_Suleyman_Massif) at 4,850 m. ([36°22′N 50°58′E](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=36_22_N_50_58_E)).[1] The Taleqan and [Alamut](/source/Alamut_River) rivers conjoin in the village of Shirkou to form the Shahrud.[2] The Alamut river, the northern tributary, starts near the summit of [Alam-Kuh](/source/Alam-Kuh), the second highest peak in Iran, and flows through a steep gorges.[3]: 42–43 The Shahrood then flows westward through the southern [Alborz mountain range](/source/Alborz) to its [confluence](/source/Confluence) with the [Sefid River](/source/Sefid-Rud). It is a right-hand tributary of the Sefid, which then flows north through the Alborz into the [Caspian Sea](/source/Caspian_Sea).

The Shahrood is about 175 kilometres (109 mi) long.[1]
