***Shadow of Darkness*** (Khmer: *ស្រមោលអន្ធការ*, *Sramol anthokear*; alternatively ***Sror Morl Anthakal***)[3] is a 1989 Cambodian [historical drama](/source/Historical_drama) film written and directed by [Yvon Hem](/source/Yvon_Hem).[4] It is the first Cambodian film to be set during the [Democratic Kampuchea](/source/Democratic_Kampuchea) era, as previous films about the period such as *[The Killing Fields](/source/The_Killing_Fields_(film))* and *[Nine Circles of Hell](/source/Dev%C4%9Bt_kruh%C5%AF_pekla)* were from foreign countries.[5] The film tells the fictional story of Visal, who survived the tragic execution of his family by the [Khmer Rouge](/source/Khmer_Rouge) and escapes toward Vietnam.[3]
