2nd century Roman jurist

**Sextus Pomponius** (fl. 2nd century) was a [Roman](/source/Ancient_Romans) [jurist](/source/Jurist) who lived during the reigns of [Hadrian](/source/Hadrian), [Antoninus Pius](/source/Antoninus_Pius), and [Marcus Aurelius](/source/Marcus_Aurelius).[1]

## Name

[Sextus](/source/Sextus_(praenomen)) was a fairly common Roman [given name](/source/Given_name) (*[praenomen](/source/Praenomen)*) while his surname seems to indicate he belonged to the [Pomponia](/source/Gens_Pomponia) [family](/source/Family) (*[gens](/source/Gens_(Rome))*). Other writers have expressed a view that the name Sextus Pomponius was shared by another jurist, although Puchta suggested the assumption of two Pomponii was unsupported by the evidence.[2]

## Works

S. Pomponius wrote a book on the law up to the time of Hadrian, known as the *[Enchiridion](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Enchiridion_(Pomponius)&action=edit&redlink=1)* ([Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek_language): Ἐγχειρίδιον, *Enkheidírion*, "Handbook").[3][4] A long excerpt of the work forms part of [Justinian](/source/Justinian)'s [*Digest*](/source/Digest_(Roman_law)) dealing with the origin of the [Roman Constitution](/source/Roman_Constitution) and [various offices](/source/Political_institutions_of_ancient_Rome).
