# Sesamol

**Sesamol** is a natural [organic compound](/source/Organic_compound) which is a component of [sesame seeds](/source/Sesame_seeds) and [sesame oil](/source/Sesame_oil), with anti-[inflammatory](/source/Inflammation), [antioxidant](/source/Antioxidant), [antidepressant](/source/Antidepressant) and [neuroprotective](/source/Neuroprotection) properties. It is a white crystalline solid that is a derivative of [phenol](/source/Phenol). It is sparingly soluble in water, but miscible with most oils. It can be produced by [organic synthesis](/source/Organic_synthesis) from [heliotropine](/source/Heliotropine).

Sesamol has been found to be an antioxidant that may prevent the spoilage of oils.[2][3] It also may prevent the spoilage of oils by acting as an [antifungal](/source/Antifungal).[4] It can be used in the synthesis of [paroxetine](/source/Paroxetine).[5]: 138-141

Sesamol's molecular targets and [mechanism of action](/source/Mechanism_of_action), at least for its antidepressant-like effects, is found to be through the brain [nerve growth factor](/source/Nerve_growth_factor) (NGF) and [endocannabinoid signalling](/source/Endocannabinoid_system) under the regulatory drive of the [CB1](/source/Cannabinoid_receptor_type_1) receptors.[6]
