'''Serre Chevalier''' ({{IPA|fr|sɛʁ ʃəvalje}}) is a major [ski resort](/source/ski_resort) in Southeastern [France](/source/France), near the [Italian border](/source/France%E2%80%93Italy_border), located in the [Hautes-Alpes](/source/Hautes-Alpes) [department](/source/Departments_of_France), [Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur](/source/Provence-Alpes-C%C3%B4te_d'Azur) [region](/source/Regions_of_France). Situated to the northeast of [Écrins National Park](/source/%C3%89crins_National_Park) in the [French Alps](/source/French_Alps), the resort encompasses a large skiing area, with {{convert|250|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} of [slopes](/source/Piste) and favourable weather, boasting 300 days of sunshine a year. In Serre Chevalier, {{convert|80|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} of the slopes are covered by [snow cannons](/source/Snowmaking) to supplement natural [snow](/source/snow)fall. The resort is owned by [Compagnie des Alpes](/source/Compagnie_des_Alpes).

Serre Chevalier consists of the city of [Briançon](/source/Brian%C3%A7on), the villages of Chantemerle in [Saint-Chaffrey](/source/Saint-Chaffrey) and Villeneuve in [La Salle-les-Alpes](/source/La_Salle-les-Alpes), as well as [Le Monêtier-les-Bains](/source/Le_Mon%C3%AAtier-les-Bains). [World Cup](/source/FIS_Alpine_Ski_World_Cup) champion ski racer [Luc Alphand](/source/Luc_Alphand) was born and lives in the valley below the resort.

==Ski area==

The maximum [elevation](/source/elevation) for skiing is at Telesiege Yret at {{convert|2800|m|ft|-1|abbr=on}} [above sea level](/source/AMSL), and the minimum is {{convert|1200|m|ft|-1|abbr=on}}, a total vertical drop of {{convert|1600|m|ft|-1|abbr=on}}. One of the outstanding features of Serre Chevalier is the wooded nature of the slopes. The [timber line](/source/Tree_line) is at {{convert|2150|m|ft|-1|abbr=on}}, yielding about {{convert|700|m|ft|-1|abbr=on}} of vertical drop of tree-lined slopes.

The slopes are managed by Compagnie des Alpes. ==Summer==
In the summer Serre Chevalier is enjoyed for hiking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, rock climbing, sledding, kayaking, paragliding and sightseeing. Serre Chevalier organised the MTB French championships in 2008, the MTB Trial French championships in 2009 and the BMX European games in 2010. The location was also used in the [2011 Tour de France](/source/2011_Tour_de_France) when Stage 18 finished at the summit of the nearby [Col du Galibier](/source/Col_du_Galibier). Luxembourg [climbing specialist](/source/climbing_specialist) [Andy Schleck](/source/Andy_Schleck) won the stage with a long solo breakaway {{convert|60|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} from the finish and finished the Tour second overall, losing to Australian cyclist [Cadel Evans](/source/Cadel_Evans).
