**Sergio Sollima** (17 April 1921 – 1 July 2015) was an Italian [film director](/source/Film_director) and [script writer](/source/Screenwriter).

## Biography

Sollima graduated from the [Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia](/source/Centro_Sperimentale_di_Cinematografia) in 1935. During World War II he was in the [Italian Resistance](/source/Italian_Resistance).[1]

After the war, he gradually progressed from working as a film critic to screenwriting to becoming a director[2] Like many Italian [cult](/source/Cult_following) directors, Sollima started his career as a screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote many [peplum films](/source/Peplum_film) in the 1960s. He made his directing debut doing one of the four sequences in the [anthology film](/source/Anthology_film) *[Of Wayward Love](/source/Of_Wayward_Love)*. Sollima filmed three [Eurospy](/source/Eurospy) films and then moved to [spaghetti westerns](/source/Spaghetti_westerns). *[The Big Gundown](/source/The_Big_Gundown)* (starring [Lee Van Cleef](/source/Lee_Van_Cleef) and [Tomas Milian](/source/Tomas_Milian)) was released in 1966 with big success, despite the fact that it had to compete with [Sergio Leone](/source/Sergio_Leone)'s *[The Good, the Bad and the Ugly](/source/The_Good%2C_the_Bad_and_the_Ugly)* and [Sergio Corbucci](/source/Sergio_Corbucci)'s *[Django](/source/Django_(1966_film))*. Sollima soon filmed two more westerns. *[Face to Face](/source/Face_to_Face_(1967_film))* (Milian and [Gian Maria Volonté](/source/Gian_Maria_Volont%C3%A9)) was released in 1967 and *[Run, Man, Run!](/source/Run%2C_Man%2C_Run!)* (Milian) in 1968. Although Sollima directed only three westerns and they never reached the level of popularity as the ones by the other Sergios (Leone and Corbucci), each of them is highly regarded among genre enthusiasts.

In 1970, Sollima switched genres again and directed the [Charles Bronson](/source/Charles_Bronson) and [Telly Savalas](/source/Telly_Savalas) starred *[Violent City](/source/Violent_City)*, which was one of the first violent and fast-paced Italian [crime films](/source/Crime_film) often known as [poliziotteschi](/source/Poliziotteschi). Like for all of his westerns, the soundtrack was provided by [Ennio Morricone](/source/Ennio_Morricone). Sollima's last well-known film is *[Revolver](/source/Revolver_(1973_film))*, a poliziotteschi film starring [Oliver Reed](/source/Oliver_Reed) and [Fabio Testi](/source/Fabio_Testi).

Sollima directed the six-part Italian TV series *[Sandokan](/source/Sandokan_(1976_TV_series))* starring [Kabir Bedi](/source/Kabir_Bedi) with several [feature films](/source/Feature_film) spun off the series.
