**Sergio A. Albeverio** (born 17 January 1939)[1] is a [Swiss](/source/Swiss_people) [mathematician](/source/Mathematician) and mathematical [physicist](/source/Physicist) working in numerous fields of mathematics and its applications. In particular he is known for his work in [probability theory](/source/Probability_theory), [analysis](/source/Analysis) (including [infinite-dimensional](/source/Infinite-dimensional_analysis), [non-standard](/source/Non-standard_analysis), and [stochastic analysis](/source/Stochastic_analysis)), [mathematical physics](/source/Mathematical_physics), and in the areas [algebra](/source/Algebra), [geometry](/source/Geometry), [number theory](/source/Number_theory), as well as in applications, from [natural](/source/Natural_science) to [social](/source/Social_science)-[economic sciences](/source/Economic_Sciences).

He initiated (with [Raphael Høegh-Krohn](/source/Raphael_H%C3%B8egh-Krohn)) a systematic mathematical theory of [Feynman path integrals](/source/Feynman_path_integrals) and of infinite-dimensional [Dirichlet forms](/source/Dirichlet_form) and associated [stochastic processes](/source/Stochastic_process) (with applications particularly in [quantum mechanics](/source/Quantum_mechanics), [statistical mechanics](/source/Statistical_mechanics) and [quantum field theory](/source/Quantum_field_theory)). He also gave essential contributions to the development of areas such as [*p*-adic](/source/P-adic_analysis) functional and stochastic analysis as well as to the [singular perturbation theory](/source/Singular_perturbation_theory) for [differential operators](/source/Differential_operator). Other important contributions concern [constructive quantum field theory](/source/Constructive_quantum_field_theory) and [representation theory](/source/Representation_theory) of infinite-dimensional [groups](/source/Group_(mathematics)). He also initiated a new approach to the study of galaxy and planet formation inspired by [stochastic mechanics](/source/Stochastic_mechanics).
