# Sergey Karpov

**Sergey Pavlovich Karpov** ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): Сергей Павлович Карпов; born 1948) is a leading [Russian](/source/Russia) [Byzantinist](/source/Byzantinist) who specializes in the [Empire of Trebizond](/source/Empire_of_Trebizond) and the history of [Gazaria](/source/Gazaria_(Genoese_colonies)).[1][2] His work in Italian archives helped bring to light the records of [Genoese](/source/Genoese_Republic) and [Venetian](/source/Venetian_Republic) notaries and accountants concerning their [Black Sea](/source/Black_Sea) colonies. Some of his monographs are available in Italian translation. He was awarded a [State Prize](/source/State_Prize_of_the_Russian_Federation) in 1996 and was elected into the [Russian Academy of Sciences](/source/Russian_Academy_of_Sciences) in 2003. Karpov was Dean of the Department of History of the [Moscow State University](/source/Moscow_State_University) from 1995 until 2015.[1]
