Ancient Roman coin

Roman *semuncia*, c. 215–211 BC

The ***semuncia*** was an [ancient Roman](/source/Ancient_Roman) bronze coin valued at one twenty-fourth of an *[as](/source/As_(coin))*, or half an *[uncia](/source/Uncia_(coin))*, produced during the [Roman Republican](/source/Roman_Republic) era. It was made during the beginning of Roman [cast](/source/Casting_(metalworking)) bronze coinage as the [lowest valued denomination](/source/Roman_Republican_currency).

The most common obverse types were a head of [Mercury](/source/Mercury_(mythology)) or an [acorn](/source/Acorn), and the most common reverse types were a prow or a *[caduceus](/source/Caduceus)*.[1] It was issued until about 210 BC, at about the same time as the *[denarius](/source/Denarius)* was introduced.
