**Selma** is an [unincorporated community](/source/Unincorporated_area) and [census-designated place](/source/Census-designated_place) (CDP) in [Josephine County](/source/Josephine_County,_Oregon), [Oregon](/source/Oregon), United States.[1] As of the [2010 census](/source/2010_United_States_Census) it had a population of 695.[2] As of the [2020 United States census](/source/2020_United_States_census) it had a total population of 661.[3] It is located in the [ZIP code](/source/ZIP_code) of 97538.[4]

## Geography

Selma is just southwest of the center of Josephine County, in the valley of Deer Creek, a west-flowing tributary of the [Illinois River](/source/Illinois_River_(Oregon)) and part of the [Rogue River](/source/Rogue_River_(Oregon)) watershed. [U.S. Route 199](/source/U.S._Route_199) passes through the center of town, leading south 8 miles (13 km) to [Cave Junction](/source/Cave_Junction,_Oregon) and northeast 20 miles (32 km) to [Grants Pass](/source/Grants_Pass,_Oregon), the [county seat](/source/County_seat).

According to the [U.S. Census Bureau](/source/U.S._Census_Bureau), the Selma CDP has an area of 6.4 sq mi (16.7 square kilometres), all of it recorded as land.[2]

## Demographics

The largest ethnic group in Selma is White (Non-Hispanic) (95.9%). 98.7% of the residents in Selma, OR are U.S. citizens.

In 2022, the median property value in Selma, OR was $253,400, and the homeownership rate was 88.8%.[5]

## Notable residents

Actor [John Wayne](/source/John_Wayne) used to visit the Deer Creek Ranch one mile west of Selma; it is now the Siskiyou Field Institute. He grew fond of the area after filming [*Rooster Cogburn*](/source/Rooster_Cogburn_(film)) along the Rogue River.[6] Also from Selma is [Kristy Lee Cook](/source/Kristy_Lee_Cook), who came in 7th place on *[American Idol](/source/American_Idol)* season 7.[7] [Craig Wright](/source/Craig_R._Wright), major league baseball's first [sabermetrician](/source/Sabermetrician), lived for a time as a young man in Selma while working in nearby Grants Pass.[8]
