Neighboring districts are (from the west clockwise) [Phon Charoen](/source/Phon_Charoen_district), [Si Wilai](/source/Si_Wilai_district), [Mueang Bueng Kan](/source/Mueang_Bueng_Kan_district), [Bung Khla](/source/Bung_Khla_district), and [Bueng Khong Long](/source/Bueng_Khong_Long_district) of Bueng Kan Province, [Na Thom](/source/Na_Thom_district) of [Nakhon Phanom province](/source/Nakhon_Phanom_province), [Akat Amnuai](/source/Akat_Amnuai_district), [Kham Ta Kla](/source/Kham_Ta_Kla_district), and [Ban Muang](/source/Ban_Muang_district) of [Sakon Nakhon province](/source/Sakon_Nakhon_province).
The main river of the district is the [Songkhram River](/source/Songkhram_River). The [Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary](/source/Phu_Wua_Wildlife_Sanctuary) is in the district.
