The '''Segundo River''' ({{langx|es|Río Segundo}}, 'Second River'), also known as '''Xanaes''', is a river in the center-north of the [province](/source/provinces_of_Argentina) of [Córdoba](/source/C%C3%B3rdoba_Province_(Argentina)), [Argentina](/source/Argentina). It is born in the [Paravachasca Valley](/source/Paravachasca_Valley) at the confluence of the [Los Molinos](/source/Los_Molinos_River) and [Anizacate](/source/Anizacate_River) rivers, on the eastern slopes of the Cumbres de Achala (Sierras Grandes), about {{convert|2000|m|ft}} [above mean sea level](/source/above_mean_sea_level). It flows west–east and its course forms a [reservoir](/source/reservoir_(water)) at the [Los Molinos Dam](/source/Los_Molinos_Dam) (at {{coord|31|49|S|64|32|W|}}), which is employed to generate [hydroelectricity](/source/hydroelectricity). It then flows to the northeast and divides into two main arms, which empty in the [Mar Chiquita](/source/Mar_Chiquita%2C_C%C3%B3rdoba) [salt lake](/source/salt_lake_(geography)), {{convert|340|km|mi}} from its origin. Together with the [Primero River](/source/Primero_River) (Suquía) and the [Dulce River](/source/Dulce_River_(Argentina)), it forms part of the basin of Central Argentina. On its path are located the following cities: [Río Segundo](/source/R%C3%ADo_Segundo%2C_C%C3%B3rdoba), [Pilar](/source/Pilar%2C_C%C3%B3rdoba), [Villa del Rosario](/source/Villa_del_Rosario%2C_C%C3%B3rdoba), [Tránsito](/source/Tr%C3%A1nsito), [Arroyito](/source/Arroyito%2C_C%C3%B3rdoba), [El Tío](/source/El_T%C3%ADo), [Concepción del Tío](/source/Concepci%C3%B3n_del_T%C3%ADo), [Marull](/source/Marull), [Balnearia](/source/Balnearia) and [Altos de Chipión](/source/Altos_de_Chipi%C3%B3n).

The alternative name of ''Xanaes'' is said to have its origin in the [Native America](/source/Indigenous_peoples_of_the_Americas)n language of the [Comechingones](/source/Comechingones), and has been almost lost until the 1980s, when Xanaes was started being used in maps, perhaps to attract tourism with a more ''exotic'' name, but the population of the area continues to use the denomination ''Segundo''.
