'''Sebecia''' is an extinct [clade](/source/clade) of [mesoeucrocodylia](/source/mesoeucrocodylia)n [crocodyliform](/source/crocodyliform)s that includes [peirosaurid](/source/peirosaurid)s and [sebecid](/source/sebecid)s. It was first constructed in 2007 to include ''[Hamadasuchus](/source/Hamadasuchus)'', Peirosauridae, and ''[Sebecus](/source/Sebecus)''. It was initially considered to be the [sister taxon](/source/sister_taxon) of the clade [Neosuchia](/source/Neosuchia), which includes living [crocodilia](/source/crocodilia)ns, although some later studies have placed it within Neosuchia as a [basal](/source/basal_(phylogenetics)) clade.[{{cite journal |last=Larsson |first=H. According to paleontologists [Hans Larsson](/source/Hans_Larsson_(paleontologist)) and [Hans-Dieter Sues](/source/Hans-Dieter_Sues), who constructed the clade in 2007, Sebecia also includes genera that were once assigned to [Baurusuchidae](/source/Baurusuchidae), namely ''[Pabwehshi](/source/Pabwehshi)''. However, other baurusuchids, namely ''[Baurusuchus](/source/Baurusuchus)'', were placed outside Sebecia. Therefore, Baurusuchidae was considered [polyphyletic](/source/polyphyletic) and thus not a true clade. Juan Leardi and colleagues in 2024 defined '''Sebecia''' in the ''[PhyloCode](/source/PhyloCode)'' as "the most inclusive clade including ''[Sebecus icaeorhinus](/source/Sebecus_icaeorhinus)'' and ''[Lomasuchus palpebrosus](/source/Lomasuchus_palpebrosus)'', but not ''[Baurusuchus pachecoi](/source/Baurusuchus_pachecoi)'', ''[Notosuchus terrestris](/source/Notosuchus_terrestris)'', and ''[Crocodylus niloticus](/source/Crocodylus_niloticus)''".[{{Cite journal |last1=Leardi |first1=J. Larsson and Sues defined Sebecidae as all taxa more closely related to ''Sebecus'' than to ''[Peirosaurus](/source/Peirosaurus)'' or ''[Uberabasuchus](/source/Uberabasuchus)'', both of which are peirosaurids. They defined Peirosauridae as all taxa more closely related to ''Peirosaurus'' and ''Uberabasuchus'' than to ''Sebecus'', which is a sebecid. This definition is problematic, especially in relation to later phylogenetic studies of crocodyliforms. Many of these studies have found sebecids to be [derived](/source/Synapomorphy) members of a clade containing [notosuchia](/source/notosuchia)ns, while finding peirosaurids to be basal neosuchians. If the definitions of these two families are applied to later phylogenetic analyses, Sebecidae would include all notosuchians and Peirosauridae would include all neosuchians.{{Citation needed|date=September 2022}}
