'''Sebastian Marka''' (born 1978 in [Geneva](/source/Geneva), [Switzerland](/source/Switzerland)) is a German film director and editor.

==Life and work==
Sebastian Marka was born in Geneva in 1978 and grew up in [Königsbach-Stein](/source/K%C3%B6nigsbach-Stein) near [Karlsruhe](/source/Karlsruhe). Marka began studying at the [Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg](/source/Filmakademie_Baden-W%C3%BCrttemberg) in 2001 and graduated in 2005 with a degree in ''Film & Media''.<ref>[http://www.abovetheline.de/vita/en/139532/sebastian-marka Profile of Sebastian Marka at his agency ''Above The Line.''] Retrieved February 2, 2021.</ref>

While still a student, Marka began working as a [film editor](/source/film_editor). He edited [commercials](/source/Television_advertisement), [short-](/source/short_film) and [feature film](/source/feature_film)s. After graduating, he continued his editing work and was responsible for editing several [Television production](/source/Television_production)s such as ''[Unschuldig](/source/Unschuldig)'' or ''[100 Code](/source/100_Code)'', an internationally co-produced Swedish [crime drama](/source/crime_drama) series.

In 2010 Marka's short film - thriller ''[Interview](/source/Interview_(2010_film))''<ref>[https://programm.ard.de/TV/arte/interview/eid_287246476292884 Info about the short film ''Interview'' (2010) and short bio about Sebastian Marka] on the [ARD](/source/ARD_(broadcaster))-website (in German). Retrieved February 2, 2021.</ref> was released, for which he received many [award](/source/award)s at German and international [film festival](/source/film_festival)s.

Due to the success of his short film ''Interview'' he received his first directing assignments. After directing five episodes of the German TV series {{Lang|de|[Notruf Hafenkante](/source/Notruf_Hafenkante)}}, Marka subsequently shot ten 90-minute episodes of the popular German [police crime drama series](/source/police_crime_drama) {{Lang|de|[Tatort](/source/Tatort)}} since 2013, three of which he edited himself.

The award-winning three {{Lang|de|Tatort}}-episodes ''[Long Live Death](/source/Tatort%3A_Es_lebe_der_Tod)'' ''(Tatort: Es lebe der Tod)'', ''Tatort: Die Wahrheit'', ''Tatort: Meta'', and four other episodes were created in collaboration with [Erol Yesilkaya](/source/Erol_Yesilkaya). He wrote the screenplays for all seven episodes. Marka had met Yesilkaya in 2012 and worked with him frequently until then.

In an interview with the German trade magazine ''Blickpunkt:Film'', Marka compares their cooperation to the "[showrunner](/source/showrunner) principle". During the process of making a film, from idea development to [film editing](/source/film_editing), Yesilkaya and Marka would be in constant exchange of information to achieve a good result.<ref>{{Cite web | url = https://beta.blickpunktfilm.de/details/455068 | title = Yesilkaya/Marka: Nach dem Showrunner-Prinzip | first = Frank | last = Heine | date = October 28, 2020 | access-date= February 2, 2021 | work = Blickpunkt:Film | language = German}}</ref>

On October 20, 2020, Marka's [dystopian](/source/dystopian) TV - [Science fiction film](/source/Science_fiction_film) ''Exit'' was broadcast on the nationwide German television channel [Das Erste](/source/Das_Erste). Yesilkaya again wrote the screenplay for the film, which is set in the year 2047 and addresses the dimension and impact of [artificial intelligence](/source/artificial_intelligence) and [digital life](/source/digital_life). The German film critic Arno Frank of [Spiegel Online](/source/Spiegel_Online) said, that a ''"perfectly formed dystopia like "Exit" [...] has not yet been seen on public television"'' in Germany. (Eine formvollendete Dystopie wie "Exit" [...] hat man bei den Öffentlich-Rechtlichen noch nicht gesehen.)<ref>{{Cite web | url = https://www.spiegel.de/kultur/tv/exit-in-der-ard-monopol-auf-die-realitaet-a-4b909d4e-bd0a-490c-87b6-3f93111b96e4 | title = Monopol auf die Realität - Sci-Fi-Drama in der ARD | first = Arno | last = Frank | date = October 28, 2020 | access-date= February 2, 2021 | work = [Spiegel Online](/source/Spiegel_Online) | language = German}}</ref>

Marka and Yesilkaya also filmed the German [fantasy novel](/source/fantasy_novel) ''The Gryphon'' (''Der Greif'', 1989) by [Wolfgang Hohlbein](/source/Wolfgang_Hohlbein) as television series for [Amazon Prime Video](/source/Amazon_Prime_Video). Here, Marka was [showrunner](/source/showrunner) alongside Yesilkaya and directed four episodes. ''[The Gryphon](/source/The_Gryphon_(TV_series))'' was released on Amazon Prime on May 25, 2023.<ref>{{Cite web | url = https://movieweb.com/prime-video-the-gryphon-everything-we-know/ | title = Prime Video's The Gryphon: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know - An upcoming German fantasy epic will hit Prime Video. == Reception ==
The released {{Lang|de|Tatort}}-episodes by Marka were almost all praised by the German press and received good [IMDb](/source/IMDb) ratings.

For example, the German [film critic](/source/film_critic) Rainer Tittelbach wrote in October 2018, that Marka had created ''"exceptional crime films"'' (Ausnahmekrimis).<ref>{{Cite web | url = http://www.tittelbach.tv/programm/reihe/artikel-5054.html | title =  Reihe "Tatort – KI" | first = Rainer | last = Tittelbach | date = October 21, 2018 | access-date= February 2, 2021 | work = tittelbach.tv | language = German}}</ref>

[Spiegel Online](/source/Spiegel_Online) - critic Christian Buß also wrote in a 2018 {{Lang|de|Tatort}} - review, that Marka had ''"repeatedly artfully widened the format of the series with cinematic '{{Lang|de|Tatort}}-episodes' such as the Berlin episode 'Meta' or the '[Se7en](/source/Seven_(1995_film))' variation"'' for the Frankfurt {{Lang|de|Tatort}} edition (hat mit cineastischen "Tatorten" wie der Berliner Folge "Meta" oder der "Se7en"-Variation [...] immer wieder kunstvoll das Format der Reihe geweitet).<ref>{{Cite web | url = https://www.spiegel.de/kultur/tv/tatort-ki-aus-muenchen-wer-glaubt-noch-an-die-ungehackte-empfaengnis-a-1233302.html | title = Wer glaubt noch an die ungehackte Empfängnis? - "Tatort" über künstliche Intelligenz | first = Christian | last = Buß | date = October 19, 2018 | access-date= February 2, 2021 | work = [Spiegel Online](/source/Spiegel_Online) | language = German}}</ref>

In addition, some of the {{Lang|de|Tatort}} - episodes won national and international awards. For example, the episode [Long Live Death](/source/Long_Live_Death_(2016_film)) celebrated its international premiere at the [Austin Film Festival](/source/Austin_Film_Festival) in 2016. And Marka won an [audience award](/source/audience_award) for it at the [Nashville Film Festival](/source/Nashville_Film_Festival) in 2017 and received a jury award at the [Garden State Film Festival](/source/Garden_State_Film_Festival) in 2017.

For the {{Lang|de|Tatort}}-episode ''Die Wahrheit'' Marka and screenwriter [Erol Yesilkaya](/source/Erol_Yesilkaya) were nominated for the prestigious [Grimme Award](/source/Grimme_Award) in 2017. They received the ''Grimme Award'' in 2019 for their {{Lang|de|Tatort}}-episode ''Meta''.
