Type of oil used for food

Omega-3 supplement capsules that are 96.3% algae oil.

**Seaweed oil**, also called **algae oil** or **algal oil**, is used for making food, with the purified product almost colorless and odorless.[1] It is also under development as a possible alternative fuel and manufacturing agent.[2]

Seaweed oil is also used as a source of [fatty acid](/source/Fatty_acid) [dietary supplement](/source/Dietary_supplement), as it contains [mono-](/source/Monounsaturated_fat) and [polyunsaturated fats](/source/Polyunsaturated_fat), in particular [EPA](/source/Eicosapentaenoic_acid) and [DHA](/source/Docosahexaenoic_acid), both of them [omega-3 fatty acids](/source/Omega-3_fatty_acids).[3] The supplement's DHA content is roughly equivalent to that of [salmon](/source/Salmon)-based fish oil supplement.[4][5]

Seaweed oil is also used for [biofuel](/source/Algae_fuel), [pharmaceutical](/source/Pharmaceutical) manufacturing, [massage oil](/source/Massage_oil), [soaps](/source/Soap), and [lotions](/source/Lotion).[2]
