## Early life

Pertwee was born on 4 June 1964 in [Hammersmith](/source/Hammersmith), [London](/source/London)[1] to actor [Jon Pertwee](/source/Jon_Pertwee), who played the [Third Doctor](/source/Third_Doctor) in *[Doctor Who](/source/Doctor_Who)*,[1] and his German second wife, Ingeborg Rhoesa. Playwright and screenwriter [Roland Pertwee](/source/Roland_Pertwee) was his grandfather;[1] his sister is actress Dariel Pertwee.[1]

Pertwee was educated at [Teddington Boys' School](/source/Teddington_School),[1] in [Richmond upon Thames](/source/Richmond_upon_Thames), and then [Sunbury College](/source/Sunbury_Manor_School), Surrey.[1] He later studied acting at [Bristol Old Vic Theatre School](/source/Bristol_Old_Vic_Theatre_School), graduating in 1986.[1][2]

## Career

### Theatre

Pertwee joined the [Royal Shakespeare Company](/source/Royal_Shakespeare_Company) and toured with them for three years.[3] During this time, he appeared in *[Titus Andronicus](/source/Titus_Andronicus)* at the [Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon](/source/Swan_Theatre%2C_Stratford-upon-Avon) (1987),[3] and *[The New Inn](/source/The_New_Inn)* at the [People's Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne](/source/People's_Theatre%2C_Newcastle_upon_Tyne) (1988).[3]

### TV and film

He appeared in Agatha Christie's *Hercule Poirot – The King of Clubs* alongside David Suchet (12 March 1989). In 1992, he starred as Keith Chadwick in *[Leon the Pig Farmer](/source/Leon_the_Pig_Farmer)*.[4][5]

In 1994, he appeared as Hugh Beringar alongside [Derek Jacobi](/source/Derek_Jacobi) in the first series of the television series *[Cadfael](/source/Cadfael_(TV_series))*. In 1997, he starred alongside [Laurence Fishburne](/source/Laurence_Fishburne), [Sam Neill](/source/Sam_Neill), [Joely Richardson](/source/Joely_Richardson), and [Jason Isaacs](/source/Jason_Isaacs) in the space based [science fiction horror](/source/Science_fiction_horror) film *[Event Horizon](/source/Event_Horizon_(film))* (1997).[6] In 1998, he starred alongside [Kurt Russell](/source/Kurt_Russell) in the [science fiction](/source/Science_fiction) [action film](/source/Action_film) *[Soldier](/source/Soldier_(1998_American_film))* (1998).[7]

In 1999 he portrayed [Brutus](/source/Brutus) in the [Hallmark Channel](/source/Hallmark_Channel) film *[Cleopatra](/source/Cleopatra_(1999_film))*. He co-owned the [Natural Nylon](/source/Natural_Nylon) film production company along with [Sadie Frost](/source/Sadie_Frost), [Jude Law](/source/Jude_Law), [Jonny Lee Miller](/source/Jonny_Lee_Miller), and [Ewan McGregor](/source/Ewan_McGregor).[8] and starred alongside them in *[Love, Honour and Obey](/source/Love%2C_Honour_and_Obey)* (2000).[9] Pertwee became known for his portrayal of grimacing death, particularly in the [Neil Marshall](/source/Neil_Marshall) [Werewolf](/source/Werewolf) film *[Dog Soldiers](/source/Dog_Soldiers_(film))* (2002),[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] a skill which led to him being awarded 'Best Death Face' at Bristol Old Vic.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

He appeared in the film *[Devil's Playground](/source/Devil's_Playground_(2010_film))* (2010),[7] a horror film directed by [Mark McQueen](/source/Mark_McQueen), starring alongside [Danny Dyer](/source/Danny_Dyer), [Jaime Murray](/source/Jaime_Murray), and [Craig Fairbrass](/source/Craig_Fairbrass). Pertwee appeared in the Nazi [zombie film](/source/Zombie_film) *The 4th Reich*[10] which he filmed in 2010, directed by Shaun Smith.[11]

In 2014, he was cast in [Fox](/source/Fox_Broadcasting_Company)'s TV series *[Gotham](/source/Gotham_(TV_series))*, a series presenting an origin for the characters of the [Batman](/source/Batman) franchise. Pertwee portrays [Alfred Pennyworth](/source/Alfred_Pennyworth), an [ex-special forces](/source/Special_Air_Service) soldier from London who works as the Wayne family's loyal butler. After [Thomas](/source/Thomas_Wayne) and [Martha Wayne](/source/Martha_Wayne) are murdered, he becomes guardian and mentor to the future [Batman](/source/Batman).[12]

In 2024, he played Detective Inspector John Flynn in *[Silent Witness](/source/Silent_Witness)* in the episodes "Death by a Thousand Hits" Part 1 and 2.[13] He played a late night disc jockey in [Channel 5](/source/Channel_5_(British_TV_channel))'s four part mini-series *The Night Caller*, broadcast in 2024.[1]

### Voice

He appeared in the 2008 film *[Doomsday](/source/Doomsday_(2008_film))* as Doctor Talbot. His voice is frequently heard in a variety of television commercials, documentaries and video games, including the medieval empire-building computer game *[Medieval: Total War](/source/Medieval%3A_Total_War)* and futuristic war games *[Killzone](/source/Killzone)* (as Colonel Gregor Hakha),[14] *[Killzone 2](/source/Killzone_2)* (as Colonel Mael Radec),[14] and *[Fire Warrior](/source/Fire_Warrior)* (as Governor Severus). He is also the voice behind the [Northeast](/source/Northeast_England)'s tourism advertisement which started broadcasting at the start of 2009. He replaced [India Fisher](/source/India_Fisher) from the fourth series onwards, as the narrator of *[Masterchef: The Professionals](/source/Masterchef%3A_The_Professionals)*.[15] He starred alongside John Hurt as Brother Proteus in the animated film *[Ultramarines: The Movie](/source/Ultramarines%3A_The_Movie)* (2010) a Warhammer 40,000 Movie.[16]

Pertwee has been in several dramatic works for [BBC Radio 4](/source/BBC_Radio_4), including playing the actor [Oliver Reed](/source/Oliver_Reed) in the play *Burning Both Ends* by Matthew Broughton in 2011.[17]

## Personal life

Pertwee married Jacqueline Jane "Jacqui" Hamilton-Smith, a [make-up artist](/source/Make-up_artist), daughter of [Anthony Hamilton-Smith](/source/Anthony_Hamilton-Smith%2C_3rd_Baron_Colwyn), on 12 June 1999 at the [House of Lords](/source/House_of_Lords). His wife gave birth to twins, in 2001. They were born prematurely; one died four days later.[18]

## Politics

Pertwee presented a television [party political broadcast](/source/Party_political_broadcast) on behalf of the [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) in the [2010 UK general election](/source/2010_UK_general_election).[19][20]
