Deason got his start doing [graphic design](/source/graphic_design) for [Detroit techno](/source/Detroit_techno) artists while studying at the [Center for Creative Studies](/source/Center_for_Creative_Studies); among those whose sleeves he designed were [Juan Atkins](/source/Juan_Atkins), [Derrick May](/source/Derrick_May_(musician)), [Kenny Larkin](/source/Kenny_Larkin), and [A Guy Called Gerald](/source/A_Guy_Called_Gerald). He first produced for [Acacia Records](/source/Acacia_Records), owned by [K Hand](/source/K_Hand), and did work at [Richie Hawtin](/source/Richie_Hawtin)'s studio before founding his own label, [Matrix Records](/source/Matrix_Records). His first full-length, ''Razorback'', was issued on [Studio !K7](/source/Studio_!K7) in 1996.
