'''Scrayingham''' is a village and [civil parish](/source/civil_parish) in [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire), England. The population was less than 100 at the 2011 census. Details are included in the civil parish of [Howsham, North Yorkshire](/source/Howsham%2C_North_Yorkshire). The village is situated approximately {{convert|9|mi|km|0}} north-east from the centre of the city and [county town](/source/county_town) of [York](/source/York). It was historically part of the [East Riding of Yorkshire](/source/East_Riding_of_Yorkshire) until 1974 and part of the [Ryedale](/source/Ryedale) district from 1974 to 2023. It is now administered by the unitary [North Yorkshire Council](/source/North_Yorkshire_Council).

The name Scarayingham possibly derives from the [Old English](/source/Old_English) ''Scirheahingashām'' meaning 'village of Scirheah's people'. Alternatively, the first element may be derived from the [Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse) personal name ''Skrati''. Another theory suggests that it derives from ''Scraeginghām'', meaning 'village at a place called Scraeging'.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk/map/place/Yorkshire%20ER/Scrayingham|title=Scrayingham |website=Key to English Place-Names |publisher=The Institute for Name-Studies |access-date=28 October 2025}}</ref>

Scrayingham is significant for being the parish where [George Hudson](/source/George_Hudson) was born and buried.<ref>[http://www.historyofyork.org.uk/themes/victorian/the-railway-king-george-hudson History of York, The Railway King George Hudson]</ref> Today the area has a horse riding school, a few small businesses and a mixture of modern stone [cottage](/source/cottage)s built in the [Georgian style](/source/georgian_architecture), and traditional preserved cottages from earlier times. It also has a post office.<ref>[http://www.postoffice.co.uk/bing-maps/static-map/YO411JD Post Office Finder - Royal Mail]</ref>

The hamlet of [Leppington](/source/Leppington%2C_North_Yorkshire), {{convert|2|mi|km|1}} to the north-east, forms part of the parish.

In 1823 Scrayingham was a civil parish in the [Wapentake](/source/Hundred_(county_subdivision)) of [Buckrose](/source/Buckrose) and the [East Riding of Yorkshire](/source/East_Riding_of_Yorkshire). The [living](/source/Benefice) for the [ecclesiastical parish](/source/parish) and the [parish church](/source/parish_church) of [St Peter's](/source/Saint_Peter) was under the patronage of the [King](/source/George_IV_of_the_United_Kingdom). Population at the time was 157, with occupations including nine farmers, two tailors, a [cooper](/source/Cooper_(profession)), and the [landlord](/source/Landlord) of The Horse & Jockey [public house](/source/public_house). Resident in the parish was a schoolmaster, the parish [curate](/source/curate), and a [yeoman](/source/yeoman).<ref name=Baines>[Baines, Edward](/source/Edward_Baines_(1774%E2%80%931848)) (1823): ''History, Directory and Gazetteer of the County of York'', p. 385</ref>
