# Scott Burley

**Scott Burley** (born January 2, 1986) is an American [football](/source/American_football) offensive lineman. He played [college football](/source/College_football) for the [Maryland Terrapins](/source/Maryland_Terrapins_football) at the [University of Maryland](/source/University_of_Maryland,_College_Park).

## Early years

Scott was born in [Baltimore, Maryland](/source/Baltimore,_Maryland) to mother Sabrina Burley. He attended [Woodlawn Senior High School](/source/Woodlawn_High_School_(Baltimore)) where he was a four-year starter as an [offensive tackle](/source/Offensive_tackle). He also played the position of [defensive tackle](/source/Defensive_tackle) as a junior and senior. As a junior, he allowed only one [quarterback sack](/source/Quarterback_sack), and as a senior, he recorded 45 [pancake blocks](/source/Pancake_block) while allowing no sacks. That final season, he also recorded six sacks while playing on defense.[1]

As a junior, Burley was named an [Associated Press](/source/Associated_Press) all-state, *[Baltimore Sun](/source/Baltimore_Sun)* second-team All-Met, all-city, all-county, and all-division player. During his senior year, he was named a Maryland High School Football Coaches Association all-state, *Baltimore Sun* first-team All-Met, all-city, all-county, and al-division player. He was also a SuperPrep All-American and PrepStar "Dream Team" member. Rated the third-best overall player in the [Mid-Atlantic](/source/Mid-Atlantic_States) region and one of the top 150 players in the nation, SuperPrep ranked him the 11th-best offensive tackle in the game. Burley was recruited by [Florida](/source/Florida_Gators_football), [Maryland](/source/Maryland_Terrapins_football), [Miami](/source/Miami_Hurricanes_football), [Notre Dame](/source/Notre_Dame_Fighting_Irish_football), [Penn State](/source/Penn_State_Nittany_Lions_football), and [Virginia Tech](/source/Virginia_Tech_Hokies_football).[1] The *[Palm Beach Post](/source/Palm_Beach_Post)* named Burley the Terrapins' top recruit in the 2004 class.[2]

## College career

Burley attended the [University of Maryland](/source/University_of_Maryland,_College_Park), where he majored in [criminology and criminal justice](/source/Criminology). He saw action in four games as a true freshman in [2004](/source/2004_Maryland_Terrapins_football_team). In [2005](/source/2005_Maryland_Terrapins_football_team), he missed the first three games due to a back injury, but saw action in the final eight games for a total of 44 plays, while committing one penalty and allowing one sack. In [2006](/source/2006_Maryland_Terrapins_football_team), he played in the season-opener against [William & Mary](/source/William_%26_Mary_Tribe), before suffering a season-ending injury, for which he was awarded a medical [redshirt](/source/Redshirt_(college_sports)).[1]

In [2007](/source/2007_Maryland_Terrapins_football_team), Burley played in all 13 games at [left tackle](/source/Left_tackle) including 12 [starts](/source/Starting_lineup). That season, he was part of the offensive line unit that helped tailbacks [Lance Ball](/source/Lance_Ball) and [Keon Lattimore](/source/Keon_Lattimore) run for a combined 1,600 yards and 25 [touchdowns](/source/Touchdown), and allowed quarterback [Chris Turner](/source/Chris_Turner_(American_football)) to rank as the third-most efficient in the [Atlantic Coast Conference](/source/Atlantic_Coast_Conference) (ACC). He received the team's [James M. Tatum Award](/source/Jim_Tatum) as its top offensive lineman. [Rivals.com](/source/Rivals.com) named Burley a second-team All-ACC player.[1]

In [2008](/source/2008_Maryland_Terrapins_football_team), he played in all 13 games, with six starts at left tackle and six at [right tackle](/source/Right_tackle).[1] Lindy's and Athlon had named him a preseason second-team All-ACC player and *The New York Times* included him among the "players to watch".[1][3] Burley played on the offensive line that helped tailback [Da'Rel Scott](/source/Da'Rel_Scott) rush for 1,133 yards, and quarterback Chris Turner to throw for 2,516 yards. He was named an honorable mention All-ACC player.[1]

## Professional career

### Washington Redskins

Burley was signed as an undrafted free agent by the [Washington Redskins](/source/Washington_Redskins) shortly after the [2009 NFL draft](/source/2009_NFL_draft).[4][5] However, he was cut at the end of the preseason. On October 19, he signed with his hometown [Baltimore Mariners](/source/Baltimore_Mariners) of the [AIFA](/source/American_Indoor_Football_Association).[6]
