'''Scitamineae''' is a [descriptive botanical name](/source/descriptive_botanical_name). Historically it has been applied to a remarkably stable group of [flowering plant](/source/flowering_plant)s, now referred to as [Zingiberales](/source/Zingiberales): 
* at the [rank](/source/rank_(botany)) of family in the [Bentham & Hooker system](/source/Bentham_%26_Hooker_system) (volume of 1883), placed in order Epigynae in the Monocotyledones
* at the rank of [order](/source/order_(biology)) in the [Wettstein system](/source/Wettstein_system) and [Engler system](/source/Engler_system).
In the [Wettstein system](/source/Wettstein_system), last revised in 1935, it was circumscribed:
* order Scitamineae
*: family [Musaceae](/source/Musaceae)
*: family [Zingiberaceae](/source/Zingiberaceae)
*: family [Cannaceae](/source/Cannaceae)
*: family [Marantaceae](/source/Marantaceae)

In the [Engler system](/source/Engler_system), update of 1964, it was circumscribed:
* order Scitamineae
*: family [Musaceae](/source/Musaceae)
*: family [Zingiberaceae](/source/Zingiberaceae)
*: family [Cannaceae](/source/Cannaceae)
*: family [Marantaceae](/source/Marantaceae)
*: family [Lowiaceae](/source/Lowiaceae)

The [Cronquist system](/source/Cronquist_system), of 1981, also treats the plants so united as a unit, also at the rank of order, but by splitting has increased the number of families to eight, in total). However, the order is named [Zingiberales](/source/Zingiberales) and is placed in subclass [Zingiberidae](/source/Zingiberidae), which in its turn belongs to the class [Liliopsida](/source/Liliopsida) [=monocotyledons].

The [APG II system](/source/APG_II_system), of 2003 (unchanged from the [APG system](/source/APG_system), 1998), recognises this same order Zingiberales (with the same eight families) but assigns it to the clade [commelinids](/source/commelinids) in the [monocots](/source/monocots).
