**Scipione Tecchi** [J.C.D.](/source/Doctor_of_Canon_Law) [S.T.D.](/source/Doctor_of_Sacred_Theology) (27 June 1854 – 7 February 1915) was a [Cardinal](/source/Cardinal_(Catholicism)) of the [Roman Catholic Church](/source/Roman_Catholic_Church) who served as [Prefect of the Congregation of Rites](/source/Congregation_of_Rites).

## Early life and priesthood

Tecchi was born in [Rome](/source/Rome), [Italy](/source/Italy). He was educated at the [Pontifical Roman Seminary](/source/Pontifical_Roman_Seminary) where he was awarded [doctorates](/source/Doctorate) in [theology](/source/Theology) and [canon law](/source/Canon_law).[1]

He was ordained on 23 December 1876[2] in [Rome](/source/Rome). After his ordination, he did pastoral work in the [diocese of Rome](/source/Diocese_of_Rome) from 1877 until 1908. He also worked as a scriptor of the [Apostolic Penitentiary](/source/Apostolic_Penitentiary). He was created [Privy chamberlain supernumerary](/source/Monsignor) on 22 December 1893. He was also beneficiary coadjutor of the chapter of the patriarchal Vatican Basilica in 1899 as well as being [canon](/source/Canon_(priest)) of the patriarchal Lateran Basilica. He was raised to the rank of Domestic Prelate on 6 May 1901 and finally [Protonotary apostolicon](/source/Protonotary_apostolic) 27 September of that year.

## Cardinalate

He was made a cardinal by [Pope Pius X](/source/Pope_Pius_X) Cardinal-Deacon of [Santa Maria in Domnica](/source/Santa_Maria_in_Domnica) in the consistory of 25 May 1914,[1] in which the future [Pope Benedict XV](/source/Pope_Benedict_XV) was also made a cardinal. Tecchi participated in the [conclave of 1914](/source/Papal_conclave%2C_1914) that elected Benedict XV. He was appointed as [Prefect of the Congregation of Rites](/source/Congregation_for_the_Causes_of_Saints) on 8 November 1914,[3] holding the post until his death in early 1915. He was buried at the [Campo Verano](/source/Campo_Verano) cemetery.[1]
