***Scincella cherriei***, [commonly](/source/Common_name) known as the **brown forest skink** and **Cope's brown forest skink**, is a [species](/source/Species) of [lizard](/source/Lizard) in the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Scincidae](/source/Scincidae). The species is native to [Central America](/source/Central_America) and adjacent southeastern [Mexico](/source/Mexico). Three [subspecies](/source/Subspecies) are recognized.

## Etymology

The [specific name](/source/Specific_name_(zoology)), *cherriei*, is in honor of [George Kruck Cherrie](/source/George_Kruck_Cherrie), who was an American naturalist and ornithologist.[3]

The [subspecific name](/source/Subspecies), *stuarti*, is in honor of American herpetologist [Laurence Cooper Stuart](https://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Laurence_Cooper_Stuart).[3]

## Geographic range

*S. cherriei* is found in [Belize](/source/Belize), [Costa Rica](/source/Costa_Rica), [El Salvador](/source/El_Salvador), [Guatemala](/source/Guatemala), [Honduras](/source/Honduras), Mexico ([Puebla](/source/Puebla), [Quintana Roo](/source/Quintana_Roo), [Tabasco](/source/Tabasco), [Veracruz](/source/Veracruz), [Yucatán](/source/Yucat%C3%A1n)), and [Nicaragua](/source/Nicaragua).[2]

## Habitat

The preferred natural [habitat](/source/Habitat) of *S. cherriei* is [forest](/source/Forest), at altitudes from sea level to 1,860 m (6,100 ft).[1]
