The species is [endemic](/source/Endemism) to [China](/source/China).

## Etymology

The [specific name](/source/Specific_name_(zoology)), *barbouri*, is in honor of American herpetologist [Thomas Barbour](/source/Thomas_Barbour).[3]

## Geographic range

*S. barbouri* is found in [Yunnan](/source/Yunnan) province, southwestern China. It may possibly also occur in adjacent [Sichuan](/source/Sichuan) province.[2]

## Habitat

The preferred natural [habitat](/source/Habitat) of *S. barbouri* is [shrubland](/source/Shrubland), at altitudes of 1,800–2,500 m (5,900–8,200 ft).[1]

## Reproduction

*S. barbouri* is [oviparous](/source/Oviparity).[2]
