**Scheemda** (Dutch pronunciation: [\[ˈsxeːmdaː\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Dutch) [ⓘ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nl-Scheemda.oga)) is a [village](/source/Village) with a population of 5,085 in the municipality of [Oldambt](/source/Oldambt_(municipality)) in the province of [Groningen](/source/Groningen_(province)) in the [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands). Scheemda was a separate [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_the_Netherlands) until 2010, when it merged with [Reiderland](/source/Reiderland) and [Winschoten](/source/Winschoten) to form the municipality of Oldambt.

## History

Until 2010, Scheemda was a separate municipality with the population centers [Heiligerlee](/source/Heiligerlee), [Midwolda](/source/Midwolda), [Nieuw-Scheemda](/source/Nieuw-Scheemda), [Nieuwolda](/source/Nieuwolda), [Oostwold](/source/Oostwold%2C_Scheemda), Scheemda, ['t Waar](/source/'t_Waar) and [Westerlee](/source/Westerlee_(Groningen)). On 1 January 2010, the municipality merged into [Oldambt](/source/Oldambt_(municipality)).

## Transportation

The [Scheemda railway station](/source/Scheemda_railway_station) was opened in 1868 and has train services to [Zuidbroek](/source/Zuidbroek%2C_Groningen) and [Groningen](/source/Groningen) in the west, and [Winschoten](/source/Winschoten), [Bad Nieuweschans](/source/Bad_Nieuweschans), and [Leer](/source/Leer%2C_Lower_Saxony) (Germany) in the east.

## Notable people
