'''Schardam''' is a small village in the [Dutch](/source/Netherlands) province of [North Holland](/source/North_Holland). It is a part of the municipality of [Edam-Volendam](/source/Edam-Volendam), and lies about {{convert|6|km}} southwest of [Hoorn](/source/Hoorn).

The village was first mentioned in 1319 as "den Scaderdam". The etymology is unclear.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/schardam |title=Schardam - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=29 April 2022 |language=nl}}</ref> Schardam is a dike village which developed in the 14th century. There is a double exit [sluice](/source/sluice) in Schardam. The southern sluice dates from 1592 and was renewed in 1738.
