**Schaalsee** (German pronunciation: [\[ˈʃaːlˌzeː\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Standard_German)) is a 24 km2 (9.3 sq mi) [lake](/source/Lake) in [Germany](/source/Germany). It forms part of the border between [Schleswig-Holstein](/source/Schleswig-Holstein) (district [Herzogtum Lauenburg](/source/Herzogtum_Lauenburg)) and [Mecklenburg-Vorpommern](/source/Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) (districts [Ludwigslust-Parchim](/source/Ludwigslust-Parchim) and [Nordwestmecklenburg](/source/Nordwestmecklenburg)). The town of [Zarrentin](/source/Zarrentin) is located on its southern shores. Other municipalities on the lake are [Seedorf](/source/Seedorf%2C_Lauenburg), [Sterley](/source/Sterley), [Salem](/source/Salem%2C_Schleswig-Holstein), [Kittlitz](/source/Kittlitz%2C_Lauenburg) and [Kneese](/source/Kneese).

It was declared a [biosphere reserve](/source/Schaalsee_Biosphere_Reserve) in 2000 (309 km2).
