# Scarteen

**Scarteen** ()[1] is a [townland](/source/Townland) in the [civil parish](/source/Civil_parishes_in_Ireland) of Ballyscaddan, [County Limerick](/source/County_Limerick),[1] near the village of [Knocklong](/source/Knocklong) in Ireland.

## Fox hunting

Scarteen is best known for the **Scarteen Hunt**, a [fox hunting](/source/Fox_hunting) pack of [Kerry Beagles](/source/Kerry_Beagle) based at **Scarteen House**, a [big house](/source/Anglo-Irish_big_house) owned since the 1750s by the Ryan family, one of the few [Catholic](/source/Catholic) [gentry](/source/Gentry) that existed during the period when Ireland had anti-Catholic [Penal Laws](/source/Penal_Laws_(Ireland)).[2] The dogs' [coat pattern](/source/Coat_(dog)#Patterns) gave the hunt its nickname, the "Black and Tans", later applied derisively to [sections of the Royal Irish Constabulary](/source/Black_and_Tans) during the [Irish War of Independence](/source/Irish_War_of_Independence).[2] Hunt master [Thady Ryan](/source/Thady_Ryan) (1923–2005) increased the hunt's cachet among visitors from Great Britain and the United States and, later, Continental Europe.[2] Ryan was [chef d'equipe](/source/Team_leader) of the Irish [eventing](/source/Eventing) team at the [1964](/source/Equestrian_at_the_1964_Summer_Olympics) and [1968](/source/Equestrian_at_the_1968_Summer_Olympics) Summer Olympics.[2] As of 2016 the hunt was mastered by Thady Ryan's son Chris Ryan.[3]
