{{Short description|Town of the Epicnemidian Locrians}}
{{about||the town of ancient Boeotia|Scarphe (Boeotia)|greek myth figure|Scarphe (mythology)}}

'''Scarphe''' ({{langx|grc|Σκάρφη}})<ref name=Homer>{{Cite Iliad|2.532}}</ref> or '''Scarpheia''' (Σκάρφεια)<ref name=Strabo>{{Cite Strabo|9.4.4-5}}</ref><ref name=Stephanus>{{Cite Stephanus|''s.v.''}}</ref> was a town of the [Epicnemidian Locrians](/source/Epicnemidian_Locrians), mentioned by [Homer](/source/Homer) in the [Catalogue of Ships](/source/Catalogue_of_Ships) in the ''[Iliad](/source/Iliad)''.<ref name=Homer/> According to [Strabo](/source/Strabo) it was 10 [stadia](/source/stadion_(unit)) from the sea, 30 stadia from [Thronium](/source/Thronium_(Locris)), and a little less from some other place of which the name is lost, probably Nicaea.<ref name=Strabo/> Moreover, Scarphe was reported to be occupying the territory of [Augeiae](/source/Augeiae_(Locris)), which had disappeared by his time.<ref name=Strabo/> It appears from [Pausanias](/source/Pausanias_(geographer)) that it lay on the direct road from [Elateia](/source/Elateia) to [Thermopylae](/source/Thermopylae) by Thronium,<ref>{{Cite Pausanias|8|15|3}}</ref> and likewise from [Livy](/source/Livy), who states that [Lucius Quinctius Flamininus](/source/Lucius_Quinctius_Flamininus) marched from Elateia by Thronium and Scarpheia to [Heraclea](/source/Heraclea_in_Trachis).<ref>{{Cite Livy|33.3}}</ref> It was also the site of the [Battle of Scarpheia](/source/Battle_of_Scarpheia) in 146 BCE. Scarpheia is said by Strabo to have been destroyed by an inundation of the sea ([tsunami](/source/tsunami)) caused by an earthquake<ref>{{Cite Strabo|1.3.20}}</ref> in 426 BCE,<ref>according to the [https://web.archive.org/web/20180917181642/https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/nndc/struts/results?eq_0=5878&t=101650&s=18&d=99,91,95,93&nd=display United States National Geophysical Data Center]</ref> but it must have been afterwards rebuilt, as it is mentioned by subsequent writers down to a late period, including [Pliny the Elder](/source/Pliny_the_Elder),<ref>{{Cite Pliny|4.7.12}}</ref> [Ptolemy](/source/Ptolemy),<ref>{{Cite Ptolemy|3.15.11}}</ref> [Hierocles](/source/Hierocles_(author_of_Synecdemus)),<ref>{{Cite Hierocles|p. 643}}</ref> [Stephanus of Byzantium](/source/Stephanus_of_Byzantium),<ref name=Stephanus/> and the [Geographer of Ravenna](/source/Geographer_of_Ravenna).<ref>Geog. Rav. 4.10.</ref> Scarpheia is also mentioned by [Lycophron](/source/Lycophron),<ref>Lycophr. 1147</ref> [Appian](/source/Appian),<ref>App. ''Syr.'' 19</ref> and Pausanias.<ref>{{Cite Pausanias|2|29|3}}, 10.1.2.</ref>

It was, together with Thronium, one of the only cities of [Epicnemidian Locris](/source/Epicnemidian_Locris) that minted coins.

The site of the ancient town is tentatively identified as near [Molos](/source/Molos).<ref>{{Barrington Atlas|page=55}}</ref><ref>{{Cite DARE|23301}}</ref>
