'''''Scarites''''' is a genus of [ground beetle](/source/ground_beetle) native to the [Palearctic](/source/Palearctic), the [Near East](/source/Near_East), [North America](/source/North_America) and [North Africa](/source/North_Africa), [India](/source/India) . There are more than 190 described species in ''Scarites'' with more than 55 described species from [India](/source/India).<ref name=catlife>{{Cite web| title=Scarites Fabricius, 1775 | url=https://www.catalogueoflife.org/data/taxon/8KVZ9 | website=Catalogue of Life | access-date=2023-04-09 }}</ref>

These beetles share physical characteristics of the more tropical [stag beetles](/source/stag_beetles), but are not closely related. ''Scarites'' can often be found under loose rocks and boards, often in moist or sandy soil. If touched, they often "play dead" by folding in their legs and arching their backs. The adult beetles are predators and have been observed overpowering [mealworms](/source/mealworms) much larger than themselves.
