'''Scammonden''' or '''Dean Head''' was a village close to [Huddersfield](/source/Huddersfield), in the Dean Head Valley, England, before the valley was flooded to create [Scammonden Reservoir](/source/Scammonden_Reservoir) in the 1960s. The [M62 motorway](/source/M62_motorway) crosses the dam wall and then passes through a cutting to the west over which [Scammonden Bridge](/source/Scammonden_Bridge) carries the B6114. The Chapel of St Bartholomew still exists, as does the old vicarage, which is now home to Scammonden Sailing Club.

==History==
[Historically](/source/Historic_counties_of_England) in the [West Riding of Yorkshire](/source/West_Riding_of_Yorkshire), Scammonden or Dean Head was a [township](/source/Township_(England)) and [chapelry](/source/chapelry) in Huddersfield parish covering more than 2,000 acres. In the 1870s it had a church, a Baptist chapel, a [national school](/source/National_school_(England_and_Wales)), a post office and 190 houses. Industry in the village included cotton-spinning and woollen manufacture and there were [freestone](/source/Freestone_(masonry)) quarries.<ref name =VoB>{{citation |title= Scammonden West Riding |url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/place_page.jsp?p_id=976| publisher=Vision of Britain |accessdate=6 March 2013}}</ref> In 1866 Scammonden became a separate [civil parish](/source/civil_parish),<ref>{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10466933|title=Relationships and changes Scammonden CP/Ch through time|publisher=[A Vision of Britain through Time](/source/A_Vision_of_Britain_through_Time)|accessdate=12 November 2024}}</ref> on 1 April 1937 the parish was abolished to form [Colne Valley](/source/Colne_Valley).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/huddersfield.html|title=Huddersfield Registration District|publisher=UKBMD|accessdate=12 November 2024}}</ref> In 1931 the parish had a population of 394.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10466933/cube/TOT_POP|title=Population statistics Scammonden CP/Ch through time|publisher=A Vision of Britain through Time|accessdate=12 November 2024}}</ref> The area is now in the [Kirklees](/source/Kirklees) district, in the county of [West Yorkshire](/source/West_Yorkshire).

A motorway and dam across the Dean Head Valley was proposed in the early 1960s and work began in 1964. Most buildings in the village were demolished or submerged in the reservoir when it was filled in 1969.<ref>{{Citation |url=http://www.engineering-timelines.com/scripts/engineeringItem.asp?id=1142|title=Scammonden Dam |publisher= Engineering Timelines|accessdate= 6 March 2013}}</ref> Geologists considered the church and school would become unsafe once the dam was full. The church school closed in 1970 and is now a private residence.<ref name =Church>{{citation |title= St Bartholomew West Scammonden and Dean Head, West Scammonden |url= http://www.achurchnearyou.com/west-scammonden-st-bartholomew/| publisher= A church near you|accessdate=6 March 2013}}</ref>
