==History==
Eleanor Camp Criswell, along with [Rollo May](/source/Rollo_May), [Clark Moustakas](/source/Clark_Moustakas), and [James Bugental](/source/James_Bugental), founded the Humanistic Psychology Institute at [California State University, Sonoma](/source/California_State_University%2C_Sonoma) in 1971.<ref name=Bailey/><ref>{{Cite news|url=http://www.saybrook.edu/forum/univ/alumni-support-saybrooks-golden-heritage/|title=Alumni Support Saybrook's Golden Heritage - Saybrook University|date=2009-02-23|newspaper=Saybrook University|language=en-US|access-date=2016-11-15}}</ref><ref name=APA/> Author Michael Mayer recalls that the Saybrook name derives from [Old Saybrook, Connecticut](/source/Old_Saybrook%2C_Connecticut), where during a conference in 1964 several psychologists, including Rollo May and [Carl Rogers](/source/Carl_Rogers), expressed a desire "to create a school that embodied the values of the ['human growth and potential movement'](/source/Human_Potential_Movement) and to educate practitioner-scholars in the methods and philosophies of human-centered psychotherapy".<ref name="Mayer" />

Under the leadership of Criswell and philosopher [Thomas Louis Hanna](/source/Thomas_Louis_Hanna), the school began offering graduate courses in humanistic psychology.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.saybrook.edu/about_saybrook/historical_origins.asp|title=Saybrook: Historical Origins|date=2007-10-31|access-date=2016-11-22|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071031065131/http://www.saybrook.edu/about_saybrook/historical_origins.asp|archive-date=2007-10-31}}</ref> In the 1970s, the school moved to the [Burr Mansion](/source/Burr_Mansion_(San_Francisco%2C_California)) in [Cow Hollow](/source/Cow_Hollow%2C_San_Francisco), San Francisco.<ref>{{Cite book |last1=Broyles |first1=Susan G. |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=ecnjAAAAMAAJ |title=Education Directory: Colleges and Universities |last2=Davis |first2=Geneva C. |publisher=[U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare](/source/U.S._Department_of_Health%2C_Education%2C_and_Welfare), Education Division, National Center for Education Statistics, Division of Survey Planning and Analysis, Higher Education Surveys Branch |others=[National Center for Education Statistics](/source/National_Center_for_Education_Statistics) |date=December 1981 |pages=20 |language=en}}</ref> Later on it was renamed the Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center.<ref name="Bailey" />

In 2009, the school was renamed Saybrook University.<ref name="Bailey" /> In 2014, Saybrook became affiliated with The Community Solution Education System, a shared-services [university system](/source/university_system) created by [The Chicago School](/source/The_Chicago_School), to provide administrative and financial services so that Saybrook could focus on teaching and research.<ref name="Ed Letter" /><ref name="Ed Biz Weekly" /> The same year, the administrative offices of the school moved from [San Francisco](/source/San_Francisco) to [Oakland, California](/source/Oakland%2C_California).<ref>{{Cite web | title = We've moved! - Saybrook Forum | access-date = 2014-11-09 | url = http://www.saybrook.edu/forum/univ/weve-moved }}</ref> The administrative offices now are located in Pasadena, California.
