**Sayaka Hobara** (保原 彩夏, *Hobara Sayaka*; born 30 July 1998) is a Japanese [badminton](/source/Badminton) player.[1][2] A left-handed player from [Ishinomaki](/source/Ishinomaki), [Miyagi Prefecture](/source/Miyagi_Prefecture), she is a former World Junior Champion, winning the [girls' doubles](/source/2016_BWF_World_Junior_Championships_%E2%80%93_Girls'_doubles) title in 2016 with [Nami Matsuyama](/source/Nami_Matsuyama).[3] She competes in both women's and mixed doubles, achieving career-high world rankings of No. 12 in women's doubles and No. 17 in mixed doubles. Hobara was a member of the Japanese team that won the bronze medal at the [2025 Sudirman Cup](/source/2025_Sudirman_Cup).

## Career

### 2022

In 2022, Hobara partnered with [Hinata Suzuki](/source/Hinata_Suzuki) in women's doubles. On the [BWF World Tour](/source/BWF_World_Tour), their best result was a semifinal finish at the [Taipei Open](/source/2022_Taipei_Open). They also reached the quarterfinals at the Super 500 [Singapore Open](/source/2022_Singapore_Open_(badminton)) and at two Super 100 events: the [Canada Open](/source/2022_Canada_Open) and the [Indonesia Masters](/source/2022_Indonesia_Masters_Super_100). At the [International Challenge](/source/BWF_International_Challenge) level, they finished as runners-up at the [Indonesia International](/source/Indonesia_International).[4]

### 2023

In 2023, Hobara partnered with Yui Suizu in women's doubles. They won the [Mexican International](/source/Mexican_Open_(badminton)) and finished as runners-up at both the [Saipan International](/source/Saipan_International_(badminton)) and the [Indonesia International](/source/Indonesia_International).[5][6][7] On the World Tour, their best results were semifinal finishes at the [Korea Masters](/source/2023_Korea_Masters) and the [Indonesia Masters II](/source/2023_Indonesia_Masters_Super_100_II). ### 2024

In 2024, Hobara focused exclusively on mixed doubles, partnering with [Yuichi Shimogami](/source/Yuichi_Shimogami). On the World Tour, the pair finished as runner-up at the [Malaysia Super 100](/source/2024_Malaysia_Super_100) and had semifinal finishes at the [Ruichang China Masters](/source/2024_Ruichang_China_Masters) and the [Vietnam Open](/source/2024_Vietnam_Open).[8] At the International Challenge level, they won the [Northern Marianas Open](/source/Northern_Marianas_Open) and finished as runners-up at the Saipan International.[9][10]

### 2025

In 2025, Hobara began a new women's doubles partnership with [Rui Hirokami](/source/Rui_Hirokami). The pair reached the semifinals at three World Tour Super 500 tournaments: the [Taipei Open](/source/2025_Taipei_Open), the [Thailand Open](/source/2025_Thailand_Open_(badminton)), and the [Hong Kong Open](/source/2025_Hong_Kong_Open_(badminton)).[11][12][13] At the Thailand Open, they were the first qualifying doubles pair in any discipline to reach the semifinals since 2013.[14] En route to the Hong Kong Open semifinals, they upset the newly crowned world champions [Liu Shengshu](/source/Liu_Shengshu) and [Tan Ning](/source/Tan_Ning_(badminton)).[13]

Continuing her mixed doubles partnership with Yuichi Shimogami, Hobara reached the semifinals at the [Taipei Open](/source/2025_Taipei_Open) and the quarterfinals at the [Singapore Open](/source/2025_Singapore_Open_(badminton)) and [Japan Open](/source/2025_Japan_Open).[15][16] In this discipline, she made her debuts at both the [World](/source/2025_BWF_World_Championships) and [Asian Championships](/source/2025_Badminton_Asia_Championships) and was a member of the Japanese team that won a bronze medal at the [Sudirman Cup](/source/2025_Sudirman_Cup).[17] The pair achieved a career-high world ranking of No. 20 on 29 July.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

### 2026

In mixed doubles, Hobara and Shimogami reached their first Super 750 final at the [Singapore Open](/source/2026_Singapore_Open_(badminton)), marking the best finish of their partnership to date. During their tournament run, they defeated [All England](/source/2026_All_England_Open) champions [Ye Hong-wei](/source/Ye_Hong-wei) and [Nicole Gonzales Chan](/source/Nicole_Gonzales_Chan) in the first round, followed by a quarterfinal upset over second-seeded defending champions [Dechapol Puavaranukroh](/source/Dechapol_Puavaranukroh) and [Supissara Paewsampran](/source/Supissara_Paewsampran).[18] They finished as runners-up, losing the final to Denmark's [Mathias Christiansen](/source/Mathias_Christiansen) and [Alexandra Bøje](/source/Alexandra_B%C3%B8je).[19]
