The '''Sauwald''' in [Upper Austria](/source/Upper_Austria) is the largest part of the [Bohemian Massif](/source/Bohemian_Massif) lying south of the [Danube](/source/Danube). Its plateau runs from [Passau](/source/Passau) and [Schärding](/source/Sch%C3%A4rding) on the Inn to [Eferding](/source/Eferding).

== Origin of the name: Passau Forest ==
[Folk etymologically](/source/Folk_etymology) the name is believed to have derived from the (formally native) [wild boar](/source/wild_boar), but the term is more probably an abbreviation of its old name, ''Passauer Wald'' ("Passau Forest"). The whole [region](/source/region) was always closely linked to the [Bishopric of Passau](/source/Bishopric_of_Passau) and the town of [Passau](/source/Passau).<ref name="sauwald_erdapfel">{{TradLebensmittel|feldfruechte/sauwald_erdaepfel|Sauwald Erdäpfel|85}}</ref>
