# Saskia Bartusiak

**Saskia Bartusiak** (born 9 September 1982) is a German retired [footballer](/source/Association_football). She played as a [centre back](/source/Defender_(association_football)).[2][3]

## Career

### Club

Bartusiak began her career at FV 09 Eschersheim. In 1996, she left the club to join [FSV Frankfurt](/source/FSV_Frankfurt) where she made her [Bundesliga](/source/Fu%C3%9Fball-Bundesliga_(women)) debut. After five years, she transferred to local rivals [1. FFC Frankfurt](/source/1._FFC_Frankfurt) in 2005. Playing in [central defence](/source/Defender_(association_football)), Bartusiak has been an important player for FFC Frankfurt's success in the following years. She won two Bundesliga championships and three [German Cup](/source/Frauen_DFB_Pokal) titles at the club. In the [2005–06](/source/2005%E2%80%9306_UEFA_Women's_Cup) and [2007–08 season](/source/2007%E2%80%9308_UEFA_Women's_Cup) she also won the [UEFA Women's Cup](/source/UEFA_Women's_Champions_League) with Frankfurt.[2]

### International

Bartusiak made her debut in the [German national team](/source/Germany_women's_national_football_team) in a friendly against the [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands_women's_national_football_team) in April 2007. She was part of Germany's winning team at the [2007 FIFA Women's World Cup](/source/2007_FIFA_Women's_World_Cup), appearing in one match, the opening game against [Argentina](/source/Argentina_women's_national_football_team). Bartusiak has since been called up for all major tournaments for Germany. She again was a reserve player at the [2008 Summer Olympics](/source/Football_at_the_2008_Summer_Olympics), where she won a bronze medal. At the [2009 European Championship](/source/UEFA_Women's_Euro_2009), Bartusiak became a regular starter for Germany, winning her first European title. She has been called up for Germany's [2011 FIFA Women's World Cup](/source/2011_FIFA_Women's_World_Cup) squad.[2]

She was named [captain](/source/Captain_(association_football)) of the German team on 17 September 2015.[4]

She announced her retirement from the national team in August 2016 after leading Germany to its first Olympic gold medal in women's football.[5]
