The **Sarysu**[a] is a river in [Karaganda](/source/Karaganda_Region), [Ulytau](/source/Ulytau_Region), [Turkistan](/source/Turkistan_Region), and [Kyzylorda Regions](/source/Kyzylorda_Region) of [Kazakhstan](/source/Kazakhstan). It is 671 kilometres (417 mi) long, and has a [drainage basin](/source/Drainage_basin) of 81,600 square kilometres (31,500 sq mi).[1]

## Course

It arises above [Zhanaarka](/source/Zhanaarka) and flows generally westward towards [Kzyl-Dzhar](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kzyl-Dzhar&action=edit&redlink=1) where it turns south-westward past [Birlestik](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Birlestik,_Ulytau_Region&action=edit&redlink=1) and [Zhanabas](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Zhanabas&action=edit&redlink=1), then heading ever-more southerly it ends in the [Telikol](/source/Telikol), across a cluster of small intermittent lakes at the western end of the [Ashchykol Depression](/source/Ashchykol_Depression) and to the east of the [Dariyaly](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dariyaly&action=edit&redlink=1) plain. River [Boktykaryn](/source/Boktykaryn) runs parallel to it just before the Sarysu bends west towards the Telikol.[2][3][4]

The main tributaries of the Sarysu are the [Zhaman Sarysu](/source/Zhaman_Sarysu), [Zhaksy Sarysu](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Zhaksy_Sarysu&action=edit&redlink=1), [Surtisu](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Surtisu&action=edit&redlink=1), [Atasu](/source/Atasu_(river)), [Taldymanaka](/source/Taldymanaka) and [Karakengir](/source/Karakengir).[2]

The 181 kilometers (112 mi) long [Shieli-Telikol Canal](/source/Shieli-Telikol_Canal) was built for irrigation, connecting the [Telikol](/source/Telikol) lacustrine basin to the north with the [Syr Darya](/source/Syr_Darya) river near [Shieli](/source/Shieli).[5]
