# Sars Bank

**Sars Bank** (named for [M. Sars](/source/Michael_Sars) and [G. O. Sars](/source/Georg_Ossian_Sars)[1]) is located in the [Drake Passage](/source/Drake_Passage) in between the southern tip of [South America](/source/South_America) and [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica). The bank's coordinates are [59°35′22.18″S 69°0′42.87″W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=59_35_22.18_S_69_0_42.87_W), about 350 km south of [Diego Ramírez Islands](/source/Diego_Ram%C3%ADrez_Islands) and 500 km from the [South Shetland Islands](/source/South_Shetland_Islands). The top of the bank lies a few hundred meters under sea level.[2]

The bank has been proposed by Chilean historian [Mateo Martinic](/source/Mateo_Martinic) as the location of the [phantom](/source/Phantom_island) [Elizabeth Island](/source/Elizabeth_Island_(Cape_Horn)), seen by [Francis Drake](/source/Francis_Drake)'s expedition in 1578.[2] If the Sars Bank was ever above sea level it may have had significant [biogeographical](/source/Biogeography) importance as a "bridge" between South America and Antarctica.[2]
