**Dame Sarah Jane Asplin**, [DBE](/source/Dame_Commander_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire) (born 16 September 1959) is a British judge of the [Court of Appeal of England and Wales](/source/Court_of_Appeal_of_England_and_Wales). She was granted the customary appointment as [Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire](/source/Dame_Commander_of_the_Most_Excellent_Order_of_the_British_Empire) on appointment as a [High Court judge](/source/High_Court_judge_(England_and_Wales)) in 2012, becoming the third woman appointed to the [Chancery Division](/source/Chancery_Division).[1]

## Education

Asplin attended [Southampton Sixth Form College for Girls](/source/Richard_Taunton_Sixth_Form_College#Hill_College) and read law at [Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge](/source/Fitzwilliam_College%2C_Cambridge), earning a BA in Law in 1982 (promoted to [MA (Cantab)](/source/Master_of_Arts_(Oxford%2C_Cambridge%2C_and_Dublin)) by seniority in 1986).[2] She went on to obtain the degree of [BCL](/source/Bachelor_of_Civil_Law) at [St Edmund Hall, Oxford](/source/St_Edmund_Hall%2C_Oxford).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Legal career

Asplin was [called to the bar](/source/Called_to_the_bar) ([Gray's Inn](/source/Gray's_Inn)) in 1984 and was appointed a [Queen's Counsel](/source/Queen's_Counsel) in 2002.[3] She became the Head of Chambers at 3 Stone Buildings in 2009,[4] and was a deputy High Court Judge until her appointment to the [High Court](/source/High_Court_of_Justice) on 1 October 2012 as [the Honourable](/source/The_Honourable#United_Kingdom) Mrs Justice Asplin. She was the third woman to be assigned to the [Chancery Division](/source/Chancery_Division), after [Mary Arden](/source/Mary_Arden_(judge)) and [Sonia Proudman](/source/Sonia_Proudman).[5]

On 22 February 2013, she was appointed as [Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire).[6]

She was promoted to the Court of Appeal on 7 October 2017.[7]

In January 2019, Dame Sarah's appointment as Chair of the Church of England's Clergy Discipline Commission was announced. She simultaneously became the President of the Tribunals.[8]

## Personal life

In 1986, Asplin married Nicholas A. Sherwin, a solicitor with [Clifford Chance](/source/Clifford_Chance), who had been a contemporary at Cambridge.[9]
