**Sara Alexandra Rodrigues Cerdas**[1] (born 23 March 1989) is a Portuguese medical doctor and politician who served as a [Member of the European Parliament](/source/Member_of_the_European_Parliament) for the [Socialist Party](/source/Socialist_Party_(Portugal)) between [2019](/source/2019_European_Parliament_election) and [2024](/source/2024_European_Parliament_election).[2]

## Early life and career

Cerdas was born on 23 March 1989. Having grown up in [Funchal](/source/Funchal), at [Madeira Island](/source/Madeira_Island), until the age of 18 Cerdas was a competition swimmer for [Clube Naval do Funchal](https://www.clubenavaldofunchal.com/). She represented [Portugal](/source/Portugal) through the national youth team and achieved medals and records at the regional and national level.

Cerdas holds a master's degree in [Medicine](/source/Medicine) by the [University of Lisbon](/source/University_of_Lisbon), post-graduation in [Travel Medicine](/source/Travel_Medicine) by the [NOVA University of Lisbon](/source/NOVA_University_of_Lisbon), a master's degree in [Public Health Sciences](/source/Public_Health_Sciences) by the [University of Umeå](/source/University_of_Ume%C3%A5) and is a PhD student in Public Health Sciences at [Stockholm University](/source/Stockholm_University), [Sweden](/source/Sweden).

During her student and professional path, Cerdas was elected for representative positions in the global health field, like the International Federation of Medical Students Association ([IFMSA](/source/IFMSA)), [National Association of Medical Students (ANEM)](http://www1.anem.pt/) and [Students Association of the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon (AEFML)](http://www.aimsmeeting.org/aefml/).[3]

## Political career

In parliament, Cerdas was a member of the [Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety](/source/European_Parliament_Committee_on_the_Environment%2C_Public_Health_and_Food_Safety)[4] and co-chair in the European Parliament's Health Working Group.[5] In this capacity, she serves as her parliamentary group's [shadow rapporteur](/source/Rapporteur) on the [European Commission](/source/European_Commission)'s [EU4Health](/source/EU4Health) program.[6] In 2022, she joined the Special Committee on the [COVID-19 pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic).[7][8]

In addition to her committee assignments, Cerdas is part of the [European Parliament Intergroup on LGBT Rights](/source/European_Parliament_Intergroup_on_LGBT_Rights);[9] the European Parliament Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development,[10] the European Parliament Intergroup on Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas;[11] the [MEPs Against Cancer](/source/MEPs_Against_Cancer) group;[12] and the MEP Interest Group on Obesity & Health System Resilience.[13]

In 2023, Cerdas was recognized as one of the 100 Influential Women in Oncology by OncoDaily.[16]

In March 2024, Cerdas was one of twenty MEPs to be given a "Rising Star" award at *[The Parliament Magazine](/source/The_Parliament_Magazine)'*s annual [MEP Awards](/source/The_Parliament_Magazine#The_MEP_Awards)[17]
