The '''Santerno''' is a river in [Romagna](/source/Romagna)<ref>Although its first kilometers are geographically in the [Tuscany](/source/Tuscany) region.</ref> in [northern Italy](/source/northern_Italy). It is a major tributary of the river [Reno](/source/Reno_(river)). In [Roman](/source/ancient_Rome) times, it was known as the ''Vatrenus'' (small ''Renus''), although, in the [Tabula Peutingeriana](/source/Tabula_Peutingeriana), it was already identified as the ''Santernus''.

It rises near the [Futa Pass](/source/Futa_Pass), at {{convert|1222|m|ft}} of elevation, in the [Apennine](/source/Apennine_Mountains) ridges facing the plateau of [Firenzuola](/source/Firenzuola) in the [Metropolitan City of Florence](/source/Metropolitan_City_of_Florence). Beyond Firenzuola, it flows northeast through the [province of Bologna](/source/province_of_Bologna) near [Castel del Rio](/source/Castel_del_Rio), where it is crossed by a famous medieval bridge, the ''Ponte degli [Alidosi](/source/Alidosi)''. It then flows past [Fontanelice](/source/Fontanelice), [Borgo Tossignano](/source/Borgo_Tossignano), [Casalfiumanese](/source/Casalfiumanese), and, once in the [Pianura Padana](/source/Pianura_Padana) (the [Po River](/source/Po_River)'s valley), [Imola](/source/Imola). The river forms the border between the province of Bologna and the [province of Ravenna](/source/province_of_Ravenna) for a distance before entering the province of Ravenna.<ref>{{cite book |title=The Times Comprehensive Atlas of the World |edition=13 |year=2011 |publisher=Times Books |location=London |isbn=9780007419135 |page=76 L6}}</ref> It then empties into the Reno near [Argenta](/source/Argenta%2C_Emilia%E2%80%93Romagna).

It is probable that, in ancient times, the river flowed eastward from [Bagnacavallo](/source/Bagnacavallo), as confirmed be the existence of a ''[frazione](/source/frazione)'' of [Ravenna](/source/Ravenna) called Santerno. In those days, after Imola, the river divided into two branches, one moving northeast toward Ravenna, the other continuing northward to join the Po. The Ravenna branch disappeared, most likely in the eighth century.

Once the late course of the river was modified, and protective measures were taken in the 1880s, the Santerno was famous for its serious floods.  Fourteen were recorded between 1679 and 1778.
