**Sannomiya** (三宮) is a district of [Chūō-ku](/source/Ch%C5%AB%C5%8D-ku%2C_Kobe), [Kobe-shi](/source/Kobe-shi), [Hyōgo Prefecture](/source/Hy%C5%8Dgo_Prefecture), [Japan](/source/Japan). Sannomiya serves as the financial, commercial, and the entertainment center of [Kobe](/source/Kobe). The district takes the name from Sannomiya Shrine, a branch of [Ikuta Shrine](/source/Ikuta_Shrine).[1]

Before the 1920s, Sannomiya was just a small suburb of the city. The major suburbs were [Motomachi](/source/Motomachi%2C_Kobe) and [Shinkaichi](/source/Shinkaichi) which are west of Sannomiya. In 1933, the [Sogo](/source/Sogo) [Department Store](/source/Department_Store) moved from Motomachi to premises in front of [Sannomiya Station](/source/Sannomiya_Station). The area started to develop rapidly.

Sannomiya is also the hub for most of the transportation systems in Kobe. [JR West](/source/West_Japan_Railway_Company), [Hankyu Railway](/source/Hankyu_Railway), [Hanshin Electric Railway](/source/Hanshin_Electric_Railway), [Kobe Municipal Subway](/source/Kobe_Municipal_Subway) and [Kobe New Transit](/source/Kobe_New_Transit) use [Kobe-Sannomiya Station](/source/Kobe-Sannomiya_Station) as their primary station in the area. The [Kobe Incident](/source/Kobe_Incident) in 1868 occurred in this suburb in front of the Sannomiya Shrine.
