# Sandy Welch

**Sandra Elizabeth "Sandy" Welch** (born 6 December 1953 in [Chester](/source/Chester), [Cheshire](/source/Cheshire)) is a British [television writer](/source/Television_writer) and [screenwriter](/source/Screenwriter).

## Career

As a screenwriter, Welch has developed many serials for the [BBC](/source/BBC), including *The Magnificent 7*, adaptations of [Charles Dickens](/source/Charles_Dickens)' novel *[Our Mutual Friend](/source/Our_Mutual_Friend_(1998_TV_serial))* and [Elizabeth Gaskell](/source/Elizabeth_Gaskell)'s *[North and South](/source/North_%26_South_(TV_serial))*, and the well-received 2006 interpretation of [Charlotte Brontë](/source/Charlotte_Bront%C3%AB)'s *[Jane Eyre](/source/Jane_Eyre_(2006_TV_series))*.[1] In 2009 Welch adapted *[Emma](/source/Emma_(2009_TV_serial))* by [Jane Austen](/source/Jane_Austen) and *[The Turn of the Screw](/source/The_Turn_of_the_Screw_(2009_film))* for the [BBC](/source/BBC).[2][3]

Welch won a [BAFTA](/source/BAFTA) in 1999 for "Best Drama Serial" *[Our Mutual Friend](/source/Our_Mutual_Friend_(1998_TV_serial))*, the award was shared with Catherine Wearing and [Julian Farino](/source/Julian_Farino). She was also nominated for the [Edgar Award](/source/Edgar_Award) for "Best Television Feature or Miniseries" *A Dark Adapted Eye* in 1996 and nominated for an [Emmy Award](/source/Emmy_Award) for "Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special" for *[Jane Eyre](/source/Jane_Eyre_(2006_TV_series))* in 2007.[4][5]

## Personal life

Welch is a graduate of the [National Film and Television School](/source/National_Film_and_Television_School).[6]

Welch married television dramatist [Stephen Poliakoff](/source/Stephen_Poliakoff). The couple have two children.[7]
