**Sandow "Sandy" Sacks Ruby** (July 23, 1941 – November 22, 2008) was an American [mathematician](/source/Mathematician) and [entrepreneur](/source/Entrepreneur) who helped found the electronics retail company Tech HiFi.[1]

He was born in [Orange, New Jersey](/source/Orange%2C_New_Jersey), to Myron Ruby and Leonore Sacks. The earliest years of his life were spent on army bases as his father served as an officer in the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army) during [World War II](/source/World_War_II) but the rest of his childhood was mostly spent in [Essex Fells](/source/Essex_Fells%2C_New_Jersey) and [South Orange](/source/South_Orange%2C_New_Jersey). After graduation from [Phillips Academy](/source/Phillips_Academy) in [Andover, Massachusetts](/source/Andover%2C_Massachusetts), he was accepted into [Harvard](/source/Harvard), where he studied mathematics, he later attended M.I.T.[1]

While at [M.I.T.](/source/M.I.T.) he and a fellow student by the name of [John Strohbeen](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_Strohbeen&action=edit&redlink=1) started selling stereos out of their dorm room, a business which would grow into Tech HiFi, one of the largest consumer electronics chains in the country. Ruby and Strohbeen opened their first store at the corner of [Massachusetts Avenue](/source/Massachusetts_Avenue_(Boston)) and Vassar street in [Cambridge](/source/Cambridge%2C_Massachusetts). The business had expanded to more than eighty stores by the time they went out of business during the mid eighties.[2]

He died in [Boston](/source/Boston) at the age of 67 from [diabetes](/source/Diabetes)-related complications.[1] He was the brother of Democratic Party official Alice Germond, and the half-brother of poet and journalist [Michael Handler Ruby](/source/Michael_Handler_Ruby).
