'''John Alexander Kirkpatrick Millar''' (born 13 November 1939), known as '''Sandy Millar''', is a retired [Anglican](/source/Anglicanism) [bishop](/source/bishop) who, on 27 November 2005, was consecrated in [Kampala](/source/Kampala) as an [assistant bishop](/source/assistant_bishop) in the [Province](/source/Province) of Uganda,<ref>{{cite web|website=Diocese of London|title=Sandy Millar to become a Bishop|url=http://www.london.anglican.org/NewsShow_5129

He thereafter served as [priest-in-charge](/source/priest-in-charge) of St Mark's, [Tollington Park](/source/Tollington_Park) in [North London](/source/North_London) until 2 February 2011 when he retired.

== Personal life ==

Millar was born into an upper class Scottish family. His father was a [major-general](/source/major-general). He was educated at [Lambrook Preparatory School](/source/Lambrook), [Eton College](/source/Eton_College) and [Trinity College, Cambridge](/source/Trinity_College%2C_Cambridge), graduating in 1962 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, promoted [Master of Arts](/source/Master_of_Arts_(Oxbridge_and_Dublin)) in 1966.<ref>{{Cite web|title=The Rt Revd John Alexander Kirkpatrick (Sandy) MILLAR|url=https://www.crockford.org.uk/people/26417/the-rt-revd-john-alexander-kirkpatrick-millar|access-date=2021-12-15|website=www.crockford.org.uk}}</ref> He practised as a [barrister](/source/barrister) for 10 years. After that, he gained a [diploma](/source/diploma) in [theology](/source/theology) from the [University of Durham](/source/University_of_Durham). He was ordained deacon in 1976 and priest in 1977 at the age of 37.

Millar has been a [prebendary](/source/prebendary) of [St Paul's Cathedral](/source/St_Paul's_Cathedral) since 1997.

Millar is in the [Charismatic Evangelical](/source/Charismatic_Movement) tradition of the Church of England, but has usually concentrated on local missions and not on participation in controversies in the wider [Anglican Communion](/source/Anglican_Communion). However, in October 2007, he was reported to have said to an American church congregation at [Truro Church](/source/Truro_Church_(Fairfax%2C_Virginia)), in [Fairfax](/source/Fairfax%2C_Virginia), [Virginia](/source/Virginia) that "there is a war on for the very soul of the church" and to have told the congregation, which had left the [Episcopal Church](/source/ECUSA) of the United States in protest at its acceptance of homosexuality, "your steadfastness in the face of a new and speciously sophisticated manifestation of evil has won you many admirers all over the world."<ref name="babybluecafe">[https://babybluecafe.blogspot.com/2007/10/transcript-full-text-of-bishop-sandy.html Transcript: The Full Text of Bishop Sandy Millar's Sermon at] [Truro](/source/Truro): "Do You Love Me?", [https://babybluecafe.blogspot.com/ BabyBlueOnline], 31 October 2007.</ref> These comments were publicised on the internet, although not by him.<ref name="babybluecafe" />

On 29 April 2012, Millar was licensed as an [honorary assistant bishop](/source/honorary_assistant_bishop) in the [Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich](/source/Diocese_of_St_Edmundsbury_and_Ipswich), by which time he was living in [Aldeburgh](/source/Aldeburgh).<ref>{{Cite web|date=2012-04-30|title=Suffolk: Trio honoured at St Edmundsbury Cathedral service|url=https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/suffolk-trio-honoured-at-st-edmundsbury-cathedral-service-2034130|access-date=2021-12-15|website=East Anglian Daily Times|language=en-UK}}</ref>

== Growing the church ==

Millar was [vicar](/source/vicar) of [Holy Trinity Brompton](/source/Holy_Trinity_Brompton) from 1985 to 2005 and was the principal person responsible for the [Alpha course](/source/Alpha_course). He was succeeded as vicar and principal of Alpha by [Nicky Gumbel](/source/Nicky_Gumbel). During this period, he developed a strategy of [church planting](/source/church_planting) throughout London, thereby making it possible for dying churches to have a fresh start with congregations and [clergy](/source/clergy) provided by Holy Trinity – all in close association with the [London](/source/London) bishops. Such church "plants" included:

* 1985: St Barnabas' [Addison Road](/source/Addison_Road%2C_London), [West Kensington](/source/West_Kensington)
* 1987: St Mark's [Battersea](/source/Battersea) Rise
* 1989: [St Paul's](/source/St_Paul's%2C_Onslow_Square) [Onslow Square](/source/Onslow_Square)
* 1994: [St Stephen's Church, Westbourne Park](/source/St_Stephen's_Church%2C_Westbourne_Park)
* 2000: [St Paul's, Hammersmith](/source/St_Paul's%2C_Hammersmith)
* 2002: [St George the Martyr's](/source/St_George_the_Martyr%2C_Holborn), [Queen Square](/source/Queen_Square%2C_London), [Bloomsbury](/source/Bloomsbury)
* 2005: St Paul's [Shadwell](/source/Shadwell)

Another of his achievements is the rehabilitation of the previously disused church of [St Paul's, Onslow Square](/source/St_Paul's%2C_Onslow_Square), located in his [parish](/source/parish).

== Writing and teaching ==

Millar also initiated "The Marriage Course" and "The Marriage Preparation Course", which run both throughout the United Kingdom and in many other countries. In 2005, a book containing a selection of his writings, ''All I Want Is You'', was published.
